In an unusual move, the Vatican newspaper has published an essay responding directly to concerns raised by the traditionalist Society of St. Pius X (SSPX).

I guess it’s unsurprising that Jimmy Akin would write such an excellent and insightful article.

I thinks it’s interesting that the Vatican would make such a public response. I guess they’re starting to think that people should hear both sides, instead of what we usually just get from the SSPX side.

Yes, when I saw the by-line I thought: “How nice that Akin is writing for Catholic World Report. In his apologetics he is both thorough and thoughtful, carefully examining all possibilities and implications. I bet his reporting will be similar.”

He doesn’t disappoint. This is a very good article and well worth reading.

Now, why would anyone leak this information to the public? if not to cause trouble.

I don’t think its a leak. I think its deliberate pressure being put on the SSPX to give its “religious” assent to the teachings of the Second Vatican Council.

I think the author mentions an unknown source. so I wonder if it is a leak.

Hail Mary full of Grace, the Lord is with Thee, Blessed art thou among women, and Blessed it is the Fruit of Thy Womb Jesus. ***

No, it is not a leak. If you were familiar with L’Osservatore, you would notice that very few of its articles print the author’s name. It is wrong to assume that what the paper communicates is therefore a “leak.”

True. The author is
Monsignor Fernando Ocáriz Braña, Vicar General of Holy Cross and Opus Dei

and i do believe this is leverage to be applied to the SSPX. The SSPX needs to be regularized, and the Church needs the SSPX. We need unity at this point in history.

Found this today.

SSPX objections are reconcilable, says papal aide
9 December 2011

Mgr Fernando Ocáriz, a key papal negotiator with the ultra-traditionalist Society of St Pius X (SSPX), has hinted that Rome is open to new interpretations of the Second Vatican Council, in order to show that its documents are compatible with earlier church teachings. “There remains space for legitimate theological freedom to explain in one way or another how certain formulations present in the Conciliar texts do not contradict the Tradition and, therefore, to explain the correct meaning of some expressions contained in those passages,” he wrote in the 2 December issue of L’Osservatore Romano.

Actually, the article you referenced, Jam070406, is not a new and/or separate article, but the very one that Jimmy Akin commented upon December 5th which is linked in the original Post. Your article dated December 9th is referring also to the original one written on December 2nd by the Msgr.

Since many different comments and opinions are circulating on the internet, it would be good to read the original article to see just what it really says so that Monsignor’s meaning is not misinterpreted. The Tablet is implying a bias favorable to the SSPX, which is not the intended meaning in the original L’Osservatore article.

The “SSPX objections are reconcilable,” provided the Society can come to understand that the documents they object to are not in contradiction to earlier documents or teachings.

These are innovations in the sense that they explain new aspects which have not previously been formulated by the Magisterium, but which do not doctrinally contradict previous Magisterial documents. This is so even though, in certain cases — for example, concerning religious freedom — these innovations imply very different consequences at the level of historical decisions concerning juridical and political applications of the teaching, especially given the changes in historical and social conditions. An authentic interpretation of Conciliar texts can only be made by the Magisterium of the Church herself.
