Vatican official calls assisted suicide of U.S. woman "reprehensible"

VATICAN CITY – The Vatican’s top bioethics official calls “reprehensible” the suicide of an American woman suffering terminal brain cancer who stated she wanted to die with dignity.

Monsignor Ignacio Carrasco de Paula, the head of the Pontifical Academy for Life, told the ANSA news agency on Tuesday that “dignity is something other than putting an end to one’s own life.”

Brittany Maynard’s suicide in Oregon on Saturday, following a public declaration of her motives aimed at sparking political action on the issue, has stirred debate over assisted suicide for the terminally ill.

Oh, I’m very sorry I did not look for a link without comments. Truth is, the story was broadcasted this morning on NewsMax TVand so sounded very current so I just web-browsed real quick and used this story randomly. Just don’t read the comments.

CBS is a very mainstream source so I selected them, not Huffington Post or World Net Daily etc.

Unfortunately there people like that. I call them people who just go against the flow. A lot of these individuals might have the brains but don’t have the heart.

I’m a glutton for punishment as I kind of like reading comments. It’s a guilty pleasure of sorts.

Most shoking to me are comments like this:

“If this woman has accepted Jesus, he will receive her no matter how she dies.”

What a scary thing to teach people. It completely ignores much of what Christ talked about. He made it clear that Hell is a very real possibility. It’s like they reduce faith to a mere opinion and skip the whole transformation/repentance thing. Weird

I read one comment where some wrote “When I was a kid attending Mass, I used to sit there and say ‘Thank God America was founded by Protestants’!”

Another said, “Well if the Vatican is against it, you know it’s right.”

Today’s society is the ultimate outcome and result of the Protestant Reformation. Reject the Church and anything it teaches. Be your own moral authority.

I think society’s growing acceptance of assisted suicide is reprehensible. This specific woman’s death by suicide the face of an inoperable brain tumor is sad. I have a feeling that’s the language Pope Francis would use, and I don’t think there’s anything to gain by attaching the word “reprehensible” to a dead woman.
