Vatican Official Calls for Universal Health-Care Coverage

Is this issue where there can be a diversity of opinion? It is not a infallible teaching is it?

This is an infallible teaching if we understand it to mean “Heal the sick.” It is a personal opinion if it is understood to mean we should implement any particular means to accomplish that goal - such as government guaranteed health care.

It is an infallible teaching. See the social encyclicals of Pope John Paul II and the Compedium of the Social Doctrine of the Church.

I don’t think universal health care coverage is an infallible teaching. INot that I’ve come across everything ever written but I’ve never seen something from the Vatican requiring universal health care coverage.

With all due respect, the above reads kind of naive. Non-Catholics and non-compliant Catholics would be opposed to it of course. Most people like their birth control and sterilizations, or they wouldn’t be using them. Of course more people favor health care services that include birth control and sterilizations…that’s why they’re using them. Most of the healthcare programs funded by secular governement efforts already include them. So again, the Vatican, asking secular governments to find, organize and deliver healthcare universally, is just going to be fighting over it again, but on a bigger scale than just the U.S.

Sorry, I meant who on here, not who everywhere. And now I sound like an owl.

And yes, herein lies the problem. What the Vatican (or this guy) wants, few secularized nations will deliver. Health services for all human beings, also 100% in-line with church teaching? The US won’t have that any time soon.
