Rome, Nov. 5, 2007 (CWNews.com) - In an interview with the Italian Petrus web site, Archbishop Albert Ranjith Patabendige, the secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship, acknowledged that the papal document, Summorum Pontificum, has been met in some dioceses with criticism and resistance. In some cases, the Sri Lankan prelate said, the hostility amounts to “rebellion against the Pope.”
Reminding the interviewer, Bruno Volpe, that every bishop swears allegiance to the Roman Pontiff, Archbishop Ranjith said that “everyone, and particular every pastor, is called to obey the Pope, who is the successor to Peter.” He called bishops to follow the papal directive faithfully, “setting aside all pride and prejudice.”

Further in the article, it quotes another Vatican official from last month, saying some bishops
were being “disobedient” to the Pope, and stifling the impact of the motu proprio by their policies. Diocesan bishops “do not have this right,” he said, and bishops who defy the Pope’s authority are allowing themselves “to be used as instruments of the devil.”
This seems a little harsh. I could see them being referred to as insubordinate, or prideful, or headstrong, but I think “instruments of the devil” is probably overstating it, at least for most of the bishops in question.

You should read the language of the Church Fathers when referring to dissident Bishops! Just as harsh or more. Either you’re with God or you’re not. I’m sorry you don’t accept the word of God word for word.

It’s not clear that all the bishops who have not embraced the motu proprio whole hog truly qualify as dissidents.

If you can demonstrate this rash accusation I’ll be happy to discuss it, otherwise I don’t think it speaks well of the rest of your argument.

Hmmm…“insubordinate”…“prideful”…“headstromg”…similar qualities that got the Lucifer booted from heaven…

So let me ask a question here:
From the article I get the impression that it is not an exclusive US problem, but OTOH, in these forums I sense that this is a big US problem. Where I live, the TLM has been welcomed and all interested priests are going to the diocese for training… So which is it?
Just a US problem?
Not a US problem?
An Everywhere Problem?
or Not a problem?

The situation is even worse in Europe. The German bishops actually forbade the opening of new TLM parishes after Summorum Pontificum.

Here in Canada things are bleak too. I am working with a group of students in Montreal to organize a single Solemn High Mass for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8th. We have servers, advertising, an FSSP priest I know, but we cannot find a church. Every church we have tried has turned us down and there is grumbling from the diocese. Over one Mass!

Wow… Thanks for the info… I was wondering because around here the priests seem to be very open to it… it is the lay people (some of them) that don’t seem interested.

Is there another spirit that has taken over parts of the Church?

What kind of spirit would that be?, prideful, insubordinate.
