Vatican official suggests reconsidering Communion in the hand

It is a discipline. If it was truely the work of the Holy Spirt, it would be universal.

Instead, this indult only exists in certain countries ( mostly US, Canada and western Europe.

For example, if you went to Mass in Poland, or Honduras and held out your hand, the priest would just stand there until you opened your mouth. Communion in the Hand does not exist there, in fact it doesn’t exist for a majority of the world’s Catholics.

Has the Holy Sprit forgotten about those countries?
 
Can we pleeeeease improve the charity of this thread? It has really declined sharply. If we were not talking about Holy Communion, I would think we were on some unmoderated sports forum yelling at each other about the Super Bowl.

Please, before you post, STOP. There is no need to insult or demean another person. Even if you passionately believe they are wrong. Even if they have insulted you.

I still go to your old parish when I can for noon Mass. I’m amazed how they have half the people, twice the ministers than our parishes noon Mass, and it STILL takes them longer to distribute Holy Communion.

In addition, priests and EMoHCs would be quite ill themselves quite frequently. Since this is not thae case, your concern is not based on reality.
I would also lie to point out that it all of what you said was true, it would not matter whether you received on the tongue or in the hand.

Do these people not trust the Holy Father, proclaimed as infallible at the council of Trent?

Do they think that the Church would approve a practice that diminishes anything of the Faith?

If so - have they lost faith in the Words of Jesus Christ who promised us that the gates of Hell will not prevail

I have read that the practice of communion in the hands is ancient, and that the use of Communion on the tongue started in the 1500’s because of abuses (ie people not consuming the Host and using it for other purposes).
I personally prefer to receive on the tongue, and it bothers me that new communicants are instructed ONLY in the practice of receiving in the hands, especially when the excuse is that this was the ancient practice and we are honoring it again. Funny how ancient practices are “honored” only when is convenient! In light of the abuses towards the Eucharist that go on regularly, I would like to see receiving on the tongue receive the respect it deserves.
I would appreciate any info regarding these two practices, especially if they further my cause.

point taken I would only add if you are concerned about catechesis for first communion in your parish that you volunteer as a catechist so you can influence that ministry positively.

don’t understand the purpose of having a discussion, since both methods of reception are allowed in this country (as of now) and no one is preventing OP from doing so. Since we are unlikely to effect a change, or influence those with authority to do so, and since the topic has been discussed to the nth degree already, what would be the point?

He didn’t know what to do with the Sacred Species and I learned that he may not even have been Catholic. I took the Sacred Host (after some persuasion) and consumed the Sacred Species myself.

Now, I used to receive Holy Communion in the hand until I rediscovered that receiving on the tongue can also be a very humbling experience because parents feed infants directly in the mouth. As the Father’s children, he feeds us in the mouth, giving us the very Flesh of His Son as our sustenance.

Not to sound rude, but it seems strange for an EMHC- who touches the Host with their hands to distribute it- to receive on the tongue.

Well, I have been referred to as strange, but, in answer to your question, I have not served as an EHMC for quite some time. While I have distributed the Body of Christ, most of my duties centered on ministering the Precious Blood through the chalice. In fact, the last time I served was in Advent, 2007. Incidentally, I was ministering the chalice. Therefore, one shouldn’t assume that all EMHCs touch the Host; there are many of us who only handle the chalice. 😃
