Let me ask you this though, if the Church was so all about truth, why would they feel the need to hide anything, or punish those who speak out? (even those that were abused)
Who have they punished for speaking out? All I’ve seen them do is realize this is an issue that must be addressed and have helped the victims as best they can. Of course they cannot heal the pain, nor make it go away, so they can’t do much. I think its absolutely ridiculous to blame the entire Church for the sins of a few. Yes, its awful it happened, but it happens EVERYWHERE. Why isn’t the media jumping all over the millions of fathers who rape their children? I was sexually abused in church for years, where are my MILLIONS? Hmm? Nothing will EVER be done for me nor anyone else abused in the same church, why?, because they are Baptist. Baptists have no authority and no system in place to protect ANYONE. At least the Church is doing something. And I have yet to read any document that says the Vatican knew anything about abuse. Give me a link to the document. Knowing the media, it more than likely is taken out of context. However, I would be willing to see for myself. Not going to take the media’s word for it that this document exists and what they say is truth. I don’t base my trust in the secular world.

People get abused and raped everyday. Its not the Churches fault and it happens outside the Church much more than in it. Humans are evil. Its a fact of life. Get over it.

My apologies if this does not belong here, but I would call this Catholic News.
Any evidence (non-video), I have not trusted CBS for years. If you have any initial documentary, first-source evidence, I would be interested. If all you have is CBS, who cares? They are notorious for being unreliable, biased and basically a bunch or idiots. Never forget that there goal is only to sell air time for comercials, not to tell teh news or the truth.

It’s from a story on the CBS evening news. There’s other stuff after it too (not from CBS though), that goes into things like changing the ten commandments and things, but the main thing I’m focusing on here is the CBS story. Just how do you explain this?

Although I am a professional musician, I was also have a degree in journalism. One of the first things taught in my journalism classes was to never believe everything put out there in the media. You have to question and research before trusting in just one story. So, I tend to be hesitant in taking as gospel an individual slant on a serious subject such as this, whether conservative or liberal. It’s important to research other stories or other sources before making an opinion on the subject.

One of the things I noticed after watching the video was that the YouTube poster of the video, Jesuitinfiltrator, also has a group of other Anti-Catholic videos such as “Catholicism Satans Church”, “Opus Dei - A Vatican Cult that teaches Sadomasochism” and “Demonic Mary Apparitions Decieve Roman Catholics”. I mean, this guy has an agenda. He’s looking for anything to back up his hatred and repulsion towards the Church.

Most people do this at different degrees. Even the most unbiased of journalists, will have a bit of their own agenda in the story, conciously or subconciously, depending on how it’s structured. We know how much of a story most people read or listen to. In print, most people will read the first and last paragraphs, so you put your most important information or info you really want them to see there. The rest is placed in the middle - still important, but not as absorbed by the readers. Even I find myself doing that on the on-line stories.

So, I would take this clip of the story with a grain of salt. CBS isn’t this paradigm of truth and virtue. You’ve got to research more stories on this subject. Look it up on every kind of news source - religious, secular, etc. That’s the only way to get the truth than to rely on just one story.

Yes this is a smear piece

The document in question is Crimen sollicitationis which discusses the policy for handling certain sins and hearings on whether the priest should be removed from his position

It calls for confidentiality to protect the victim and the silence was mandated so the victim could actually come forward and report the crime without fear of being publicly known.

Whether the policy was a good one or unrealistic is up for debate. But to say the document shows a Vatican ordered cover up is an extremely distorted misrepresentation of what the purpose of the document was.

Anti-Catholicism is alive and well at CBS.

Watch the video, the document is quoted.
Yes, it is - in partial sentances. Who exactly is hiding what?

From what is presented, the document seems to be refering to sins confessed in the confessional. This is not news. It has never been allowed to reveal sins confessed. This is not a cover-up. It is the Sacrament properly administered and received.

And what document is this? 🙂
You are absolutely correct and very smug. Anyone who claims to have been molested by Catholic clergy is a liar…it never happened. Also, anyone who states that the bishops covered up the abuse is delusional or out to get the church.

Here is a link to the non-existent document: cbsnews.com/htdocs/pdf/crimenlatinfull.pdf

I don’t speak latin, but there it is. Your demeanor and little smiley faces are an affront to anyone who has been effected by this scandal.

I love the church, but to hide from the mistakes we have made is a disgrace.

If anybody wants information about this document from 1962, they can find a relatively unbiased account here:

 Oh, that was real helpful! Here is a couple more smiley’s for you BTW. Again, any evidence? No one is doubting any sexual abuse. We just think the media’s presentation of the problems is insanely slanted. Where was CBS in the 60’s if this was an issue and acutally had any real meaning? Oh, that’s right. It was a Vatican “secret”! SSSHHHH!

Wow, how nice of you. Originally, the fact that the document existed was questioned. I presented the document and made no comment on it as I am unable to read it. You should work in a rape crisis center with your compassionate attitude. I only hope that no one that is close to you ever has to deal with an issue like this.

  1. In April, 2002, Pope John Paul II called the American Cardinals to a special meeting regarding the sexual abuse topic. Here’s the link to the opening address of the Holy Father for those series of meetings.
  2. There’s many news articles regarding that 2002 weekend meeting, but they’re all about the same. Here’s the link to one.
  3. In a 22 p. letter to all the priests back in March 2002, the Holy Father briefly alluded to the sexual sins and resulting scandal here in the U.S. Here’s the link for an article discussing that.

CBS ‘broke the news’ on a 40 year old document?? Pretty slow reporting, wouldn’t you say!

I already knew that the Pope gets it. My post was referring to you attitude in responding to the OP.

Who? Be specific?
In my diocese if you were molested by Catholic clergy, it is required that you disclose it in your application for seminary. Not sure what is done with this information, but I was uncomfortable that it was even considered.

If we suppose that this was intended to cover up sexual abuse, what do you expect us to do? Leave the church founded by Christ in protest?

The Vatican did alot of stupid things in the 60’s, but not with malicious intent.

How do you know they didn’t? It just seems strange to me, that they would make such a law. If the Church is about truth and goodness as it says, then why would they try to hide something like this at all?

The Church isn’t the sum total of these individuals, even if this were a true document. Let’s say for a moment, that it is a true document…the Church’s doctrine and principals have not changed, because of people sinning within the clergy. And the Church is one with Christ–it’s not a separate thing. It’s led by the Holy Spirit in everything. The clergy are entrusted to be the sheperds of the Church, but some sin…some fall. I feel absolutely horrible over these scandals, but these scandals are not what the Church is based on. Its foundation is built on Christ, but some men abused their authority as priests, plain and simple. They are men, they are not divine.

So, please don’t make the mistake, in thinking that the horrible actions of a few, are what the Church is based on. It is based on Jesus’ love…and built on Him.

I know what the Church is based on (nevermind this), and I reject it wholeheartedly. I was a member of it for 5 years or so, but now that my eyes have been opened to certain things, I could never go back.

Oh…well, may I ask what you reject? Do you reject that it is built on Christ, as its head? Do you reject the Papacy? The Catechism? Sorry for all the questions…just curious.😊
