What is going on, why is Vidal still a priest - why write such books in the first place, unless they are professing chasity?

*Previous works by Vidal on similar topics have already been condemned in a notification of the same Vatican office in 2001 by then Cardinal Josef Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, for claiming that the Catholic Church’s teachings condemning sodomy, masturbation, contraception, sterilization, artificial insemination, and in vitro fertilization were open to doubt, and making ambivalent statements about “therapeutic” abortion.

Although Vidal at the time agreed to revise his works to bring them into conformity with Church teaching, in cooperation with the bishops of Spain, he ultimately decided not to do so.*

It sometimes seems to me we’ve gone from one extreme- the Spanish Inquisition and it’s kin- to the other extreme of such caution in dealing with heterodoxy and disobedience that the Church is almost (though fortunately not entirely, as this article demonstrates) paralyzed.

Of course I realize that dealing with these situations carries many difficulties and complications. It’s much easier to sit back in a computer chair and say “this guy should have been expelled from the priesthood and perhaps excommunicated years ago” than to be the man dealing with the whole situation in all its real-life complexity.

How sad. I just feel sort of sorry for the guy.

I feel that Satan is successfully infiltrating the Church. Look at all the recent priests and Bishops who have been attacked, some innocent and some not.

I think that now is the time to really pray and sacrifice for the Church, especially priests. Lent would be a good time to do it too.

And lastly, we should be praying and sacrificing, even small things, for the good of the Church and especially using the Sacraments, Mass, and praying the Rosary.

We know that Mary will triumph, but I also feel that most of us Catholics (including me) have not been living up to our faith. We must also pray for our so-called Catholics in our government to repent and come back to the Church.

Since this priest is in a religious order, I think any move to remove him from priestly ministry would have to originate with his religious superiors. Since the LSN article says that the order plans to ignore the Vatican order, I don’t see that happening. 😦

Was the Spanish Inquisition even started by the Church? I’ve heard that people preferred the more lenient Church courts back then and would confess to ‘crimes’ they did not commit in order to be tried there.

I’m just recalling what I’ve heard on an EWTN program with an author named Crocker.

But un-orthodoxy must be exposed for what it is.

GEEZ, why can’t they send this priest somewhere remote and KEEP HIM FROM WRITING BOOKS!

Off topic reply to Sailor-

It was started at the request of the Spanish Crown; and defense of the faith wasn’t its primary motive in asking for it (heresy threatened the legitimacy of the nobles/Kings/Queens more then it threatened the Church). You are also correct in regards to which legal system was more lenient.

Good point. If an employee worked for a large organisation and printed material totally against their organisation’s aim/goal - they would be sacked and possibly sued.

But, in retrospect , I believe that this type of problem could be dealt with through discipline, by disallowing the priest to write/publish any books - however to remain in the priesthood. This is assuming that the books are as ‘off-key’ as the article suggests. I do find it difficult to comprehend that a priest who was taught all the moral stances taken by the CC, the known sins, grave sins, etc of the bible /church could err so, in writing about such a subject area.
