I remember a few winters ago there was a reported “sighting” of Mary on the support of a Tollway overpass in Chicago. It turned out that as the snow and ice were melting and flowing down the abutment, the freeze/melt cycle created a form that looked like Mary. It was reported to the Archdiocese of Chicago to investigate, they investigated and promptly rejected it.The Vatican has published rules to evaluate the authenticity of the dozens of apparitions of the Virgin Mary reported each year.

The Church never says that any apparition is true, just that it is “worthy of belief.” No Catholic needs believe any Marian apparition. I don’t accept any myself, leaving other Catholics to accept or reject even the :worthy" ones as they will.I remember a few winters ago there was a reported “sighting” of Mary on the support of a Tollway overpass in Chicago. RightI believe that if Our Lady intends to appear, she’ll appear. It won’t be something ambiguous like condensation on a window, or markings on tree bark, or an image on a pancake.
I would have to agree with you and so would the arch Diocese of Chicago with the condensation on the bridge abutment I mentioned earlier.I believe that if Our Lady intends to appear, she’ll appear. Appearances of any one of the Saints should not be an occasion for passive enjoyment but for a pretty serious reason! I believe this anyhow.Right
What would you say to someone who counter-argues that God communicates with us in ways that are tailored to our condition, geared to where we’re at? He has appeared in burning bushes and on tilmas - why not grilled cheese sandwiches, if he so chooses? Who are you to limit the means he uses to communicate with us, just because it fails to fit your preconceived notion of how an apparition ought to behave? And isn’t ambiguity itself a sign of authenticity? Because if not, then what is faith for? And if a water-stain leads to conversions, how can you dismiss such fruits?I believe that if Our Lady intends to appear, she’ll appear. God does appear to us every Mass in the form of a wafer and some wine. He also appeared 2000 years go in the form of a peasant so God can appear in any form he wants. BTW I have no pre-conceived notion of how an apparition ought to behave, because scripture itself says Satan can appear as an angel of light so one must be careful about preconceived notions. What would you say to someone who counter-argues that God communicates with us in ways that are tailored to our condition, geared to where we’re at?
