Vatican Paper Supports Islamic Finance. France Wants Its Share of Sharia Banking
Thu, 2009-03-12 10:52
In yet another act of conciliation on the part of Western religions towards Islam, the Vatican newspaper Osservatore Romano has voiced its approval of Islamic finance. The Vatican paper wrote that banks should look at the rules of Islamic finance to restore confidence amongst their clients at a time of global economic crisis. “The ethical principles on which Islamic finance is based may bring banks closer to their clients and to the true spirit which should mark every financial service,” the Osservatore Romano said. “Western banks could use tools such as the Islamic bonds, known as sukuk, as collateral”. Sukuk may be used to fund the “‘car industry or the next Olympic Games in London,” the article says.
*Related to this news is the U.S. Government bailout of AIG, which is controversial not just on a financial level, IMO.
How do we reconcile the Vatican position with arguments by those concerned that it would promote shariah law?*

AIG Bailout Promotes Shariah Law, Lawsuit Claims
In September 2008, the U.S. Treasury and Federal Reserve took a nearly 80-percent stake in AIG when it injected $150 billion to help prop up the troubled company. Then in December, AIG announced that it would offer Shariah-compliant homeowner insurance policies, known as takaful, to U.S. customers through one of its subsidiaries. To be Shariah compliant, companies cannot earn interest and must agree to send a percentage of their revenue to Islamic charitable groups.
Following the AIG announcement, Kevin Murray, an Iraq war veteran, filed a lawsuit against the Federal Reserve, claiming that the Government subsidy conveys a message of promotion of shariah-based Islam, "…a message of endorsement and promotion of Shariah-based Islam … and [a] message of disfavor of and hostility toward Christianity and Judaism.”
