Everyone knows the Vatican would have picked U2.It wasn’t “the Vatican” that picked these. It was the Holy See’s newspaper. Never trust a news headline.

I hate it when the pressed starts something with “the Vatican said…”.Everyone knows the Vatican would have picked U2.![]()
L’Osservatore Romano is the “semi-official”[1] newspaper of the Holy See. It covers all the Pope’s public activities, publishes editorials by important churchmen, and runs official documents after being released. The publication prints two Latin mottoes under the masthead of each edition: Unicuique suum (“To each his own”) and Non praevalebunt ("[The gates of Hell] shall not prevail").[2] The current editor-in-chief is Giovanni Maria Vian.
L’Osservatore Romano sounds autonomous but apparently it is located and headquartered inside the Vatican NOT in Rome.Today, the paper takes a more objective and subdued stance than at the time of its foundation, priding itself in “presenting the genuine face of the church and the ideals of freedom”, following the statement by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone in an October 2006 speech inaugurating a new exhibit dedicated to the founding and history of the newspaper.[3] He further described the publication as “an instrument for spreading the teachings of the successor of Peter and for information about church events”.[3]
In this photo provided by the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano, Pope Francis lights a candle in Rome’s St. Mary Major Basilica he unexpectedly visited for a moment of prayer in view of his upcoming trip to Brazil to celebrate the World Youth Day, Saturday, July 20, 2013. Francis leaves Monday, July 22 for Rio de Janeiro, where more than a million young Catholics are expected to celebrate their new pope. The 76-year-old Argentine became the church’s first pontiff from the Americas in March, and the trip to Brazil is his first international journey since becoming pontiff. Catholic youth festivals are meant to reinvigorate the faithful, and Francis is expected to inspire young people with his humble ways. (AP Photo/L’Osservatore Romano, ho)

It’s important for non-Catholic posters to know the differences between Catholics and other denominations.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/vaticancityandholysee/7236258/Vatican-picks-the-Beatles-and-Oasis-among-its-top-ten-albums.html
I can’t get my reason to kick in with this ^ (thought Christians were to move away from pop music and things?) for a more “sacred ethos” i would value everyone’s opinions and views.
We also need to keep in mind that it is not “the Vatican” that produces these lists at all but writers for the newspaper L’Osservatore Romano.I remember reading about this from a catholic newspaper a few years ago about the Vatican listing these on their top 10 list. Needless to say I was little agitated and angry that the Vatican recommends these, which consequently lead to my mom seeing my agitated mood and ended up getting mad at me and yelling at me
On the other hand, we need to keep in mind that less than 20 years the Vatican listed the top 45 movies of the twentieth century, some of which contain strong sexual content and graphic violence.
Right! It is the opinion of the people who write for L`Osservatore Romano, not the pope himself. Everyone has there right to an opinion. However, the writers sometimes make mistakes whenever they look at figure in pop culture. For instance, the newspaper spoke of Homer Simpson as a Catholic, and how he is a good example ( or something like that). But the reality is, Homer Simpson is a Protestant Methodist, like the other Simpson family members, with the exception of Lisa, who converted to Buddism later on in the series. In addition, secular media outlets usual misinterpret , twist and distort what the pope says regarding moral dilemmas, such as the use of condoms:We also need to keep in mind that it is not “the Vatican” that produces these lists at all but writers for the newspaper L’Osservatore Romano.![]()
The Simpsons are members of The Western Branch of American Reform Presbylutheranism, actually. For instance, the newspaper spoke of Homer Simpson as a Catholic, and how he is a good example ( or something like that). I listen for music’s sake. Not the message. That is what was so good about the 80s. We all listened to the music only. The selection of all time top albums dates these Vatican newspaper editors too.
Rumours was a great album for sure. I can’t much remember the lyrics, but it is the mood and the beauty of the music that is remembered about all good music.
The message of some of this music wasn’t always, or even often, that great, but they speak of what it is like living in the world as it is now. That is what makes it popular.
In another thirty years, I am guessing when that generation comes of age into those kind of jobs, it will be rap music that will make the list, and the message of that genre is further down the road from Catholicism.
Luckily, people still listen to the music for the music, and the message is of secondary importance, or often not really important at all.
Music is one of the pleasures of life for sure.
For Catholics too, no less.
What! Haven’t these guys ever listened to “Workingman’s Dead”? Sheesh!telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/vaticancityandholysee/7236258/Vatican-picks-the-Beatles-and-Oasis-among-its-top-ten-albums.html

Yeah, I love that album too. And “Revolver” is my favorite Beatles album. Whoever picked these is pretty astute.I love that U2’s Achtung Baby is on the list. My favorite album of all time. I can just turn it on and listen all the way through. One is my favorite song of all time with Mysterious Ways following close behind.![]()

Like Madonna was big in the '80s?I listen for music’s sake. Not the message. That is what was so good about the 80s. We all listened to the music only.![]()
OK, Lennon was atheist, but “Imagine” is description of paradise where there is no hate and religion. Religion is necessary for the present life, but not eternal life. The music is one thing (enjoyable to many of us). The messages in the music are something else entirely. They include the fanciful (OK), allusions to hallucinatory drugs (not OK), and atheism (“Imagine,” not OK). I didn’t read the article. Is is just all-Beatles? or particular albums/songs?
