I always thought the lukewarm were those who didnt care about God one way or the other.

I think we ought to be Christians saying "yes’ when it is yes, saying "no’ when it is no.
If we say all is OK, neither yes nor no, you are OK, I am OK, no absolute truth, then that is in gray area. “Everything goes” is lukewarm.

I am not sure but. I believe he is calling for us to examine ourselves to see if we are filled with darkness or light grey. The ones who go from one minute being darkness and the next minute being light. By constantly switching from darkness to light and then back again, usually depending on the moment, is what he is calling as being lukewarm and grey because. I believe it is understood that when you keep choosing/switching side it gives mixed messages and causes confusion and it is this confusion that he is calling grey and being lukewarm.
What I believe he is calling Christians of Light is those who are filled with the Holy Spirit and bear the Fruits of the Holy Spirit the fruits of being filled with Jesus’ love, trust, peace, compassion, understanding, mercy and, dare I say it, kinship with others.
And what he is calling Christians of Darkness are those who say they have love, compassion, peace, understanding, mercy but in the depths of their being really are filled with anger, hate, resentment, mistrust, condemnation and finger pointing as to who should be condemned for what and who should be put in their place for what.
If this is correct then the grey or lukewarm Christian is the one who is in certain situations and circumstances a Christian of Light and then in other situations is a Christian of Darkness. I do believe if we are all honest with ourselves we all tent to flip-flop from being a Christian of Light or darkness. I do be believe Pope Francis is calling us to stop flip-flopping and decide to stop flip-flopping and just choose, no matter how filled with anger, resentment, or hate we get about something to choose to love, be compassionate and have mercy, understanding and kinship instead.
Hope and pray that makes some sense.

This may also help us to understand better what he is calling or referring to as being a Christian of Light. One who does not sit on the Threshold of the Church but fully emerges themselves into her so that Jesus can heal our hearts so that we in turn can see the good in rah oh era hearts too and through Him and with Him help each other to heal too by following His example.

This is an attitude that has no sense in respect to the total love and mercy that Jesus has for every person. Proof of this is in Christ’s attitude towards Peter, who had been put at the head of the Church.
