How can we be anything but amazed at how the Catholic priest sexual abuse scandal swept around the world, accompanied by the supposed unawareness of bishops, also, around the world, to what was going on, or, knowing such, did so little to impose a zero tolerance policy towards it?

“protect the church” was that the idea? suppress the truth to avoid scandal? allow the trauma of the victims to be swept under the carpet?

does anybody have an idea of the actual global impact of this predatory deviant misbehavior (to put it mildly)? in terms of the loss of membership? loss of donations to the Church? loss of credibility?

does anybody today absolutely trust any priest or bishop? or the Catholic Church or sometimes even the faith, itself? How can these things exist side-by-side?

If it’s IN the Catechism, it didn’t jump out at me, that all the above-mentioned abuses are evil.

I don’t even feel good complaining about it.

Yes, but more than that. There was not, and often still is not, a legal obligation to report claims to the police, and parents by and large chose not to take the matter to the police either. Some bishop’s knew of badly behaving priests and shifted offending priests, as Cd Pell testified.
does anybody today absolutely trust any priest or bishop?
I can’t imagine they would - I would not have unquestioned trust in any priest or any teacher for that matter. And in the event of an inappropriate action toward a child, I would have no hesitation to very directly confront the individual. I think that is a commonly held position now, but was not in the past.

One must feel sorry for the bulk of good priests stained by the behaviour of a much smaller number.

Follow up piece by journalist Peter craven criticising the Australian media for unfairly damning Cardinal Pell and creating a witch hunt.

It’s good to see that as a counter-balance to the drama-seeking mass media in search of all the villains, and preferably all the way up to cardinals and popes. People come to measure the success of these investigative commissions by the number of scalps. And in this particular commission, by virtue of the topic, each scalp makes us all, especially the victims, feel a little bit better.

Cd Pell does lack the kind of soft and cuddly demeanor and communication style that people might expect of a modern churchman. When answering question, he can seem to lack empathy. He is not callous at all, but he does not communicate well.

He IS getting old!

I think Cardinal Pell acquitted himself gracefully and convincingly.

Here is a man who has proactively lead the purge against these disgraceful pedophiles hiding in the clergy - long before politicians and the media jumped on the bandwagon.

One of the most shocking things about the entire history of this scandal is to see adult accusers/witnesses, who claim to have knowledge and/or evidence of historic crimes against children, accusing The Church of inaction while ignoring the inaction of secular authorities.

Inaction is when the parents of abused children don’t go straight to the police.

George Pell isnt a police officer. Nor is he an eye witness. So who really is responsible for the supposed cover-up?

I’ve heard and read much discussion about how The Church may have failed its obligation for mandatory reporting. But it’s self-evident that when crimes from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s are only just now being investigated, many eye witnesses to crimes and people with actual evidence, felt no obligation to report crimes to secular authorities.

In a similar government inquisition - set up by politicians to investigate historic crimes - Australian Archbishop Dennis Hart was excoriated for alleged “failure to act” earlier than he (and Pell) had. Archbishop Hart apologetically said "better late than never", and was lambasted.

Well, I demand to know why the (secular) government and the (secular) politicians and the (secular) police and the (secular) courts have waited so long to act on the evidence.

What’s their excuse? Better late than never?

…Inaction is when the parents of abused children don’t go straight to the police.
Yes. And it’s when School principals and teachers don’t flat out refuse to bring the children anywhere near a priest they believe has acted egregiously, and don’t tell him directly why they feel obliged to adopt that position. When they don’t themselves report the matter to the police. When they don’t make it clear to the Bishop that Fr so and so is unacceptable.

I suspect this is a kind of inaction we would not see repeated today.

And of course it does not make the inaction of certain priests and bishops any less disgraceful.

…does anybody have an idea of the actual global impact of this predatory deviant misbehavior (to put it mildly)? in terms of the loss of membership?
People who abandon The Church on account of this should at least wait till the cock crows three times.

Isn’t THAT when you’re supposed to show your true colors?

😦

The level of spiritual warfare underlying this saga is of epic, biblical proportions.

Typical gutless satan. Taking advantage of naive, trusting people to infiltrate the sheepfold.

Look at the perfect storm;

Perverted, ungodly people with clerical white collars faking Christianity. A generation of hedonistic post-modern liberals newly gifted with the hallmarks of the enlightenment - sexual liberation, abortion on demand, contraceptives, no-fault divorce, optional ‘blended’ families…
Unattended children, so easily preyed upon while complacent parents and step-dads/moms were busy worshipping Mamon so they could get that second car, dishwasher, color tv.
The godless secular media unleashing its (hypocritical) moral crusade with born-again zeal, fighting for the children. (Meanwhile ignoring the mass-media sexualisation of children and the millions of abortions.)
And finally, the blatant failure to heed what Jesus told Nicodemus about things done in darkness, when what ought to have been done is shine a bright light and let the Truth set us all free. The blatant failure to trust God that if the gates of hell couldn’t prevail against His Church, neither could the slander and gossip and perversion of fake clergy pedophiles.
