The Secretary of State indicated that the Holy See is prepared to sever diplomatic ties with Taiwan, but will not compromise on religious freedom for Catholics in mainland China.
“If we could have ties with Beijing, then-- not tomorrow but tonight-- the nuncio-- or rather the chargé d’affaires who is now in Taiwan would head for Beijing,” Cardinal Sodano told reporters during an impromptu press conference held during an reception at the Gregorian University.

This is true and has been discussed several times here.

However, the Chinese are not yet committed to making this move. Besides allowing a religious group with loyalty to a foreign leader, and one which has spoken against communism and some of its principles (indeed one which actively subverted the communist party in Poland), China would also be cutting its own Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association off at the knees.

That group isn’t really that big a player, and Beijing won’t let them dictate policy. But until the higher-ups make a firm decision to establish ties to the Holy See, the CPCA will try to block the move.

A week or so ago I read an article about renewed efforts to persecute the local house churches loyal to Rome. Any agreement with Rome will probably include at least the basic tenets of an integration of the two groups.

😦

When John Paul II was reigning, there were never such news/rumors floating around.

Wrong. :nope:

From the March 9, 2000 Times of London,
Vatican admits to courting Chinese
BY RICHARD OWEN
THE Vatican admitted yesterday that it was courting China and its ten
million Roman Catholics, at the risk of shattering its old links with
Taiwan.
The admission followed mounting speculation that the establishment of
diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Beijing is imminent.

Was that more bad news or consolation I don’t know. But at least the “progress” seems to be quite slow then

China Rebuffs Vatican Gesture
Beijing, Oct. 27 (CWNews.com) - The Chinese government has repeated its demands that the Vatican break ties with Taiwan, and pledge to cease “interference” in China’s internal affairs, before diplomatic relations can be established.
In a public response to yesterday’s public statement by Cardinal Angelo Sodano (bio - news), expressing a desire to pursue diplomatic ties with Beijing, a spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry said that the Vatican must satisfy Chinese demands before any further action is possible.
I’m really concerned of what’s going on. if Vatican can’t “cease interference in China’s internal affairs” (that includes selection of bishops) why it wants to forsake ROC?

Yet another sellout to Communist hoodlums.
Betray Taiwan to make friends with Satan incarnate.

I’m not particular troubled by this, although it does show the cutthroat nature of diplomacy.

The Vatican is out there to save souls and defend the faith (and faithful), not to promote one political system over another. It can do this better by having an official status within China.

While it may be rude to the Taiwanese government, it is not betraying the Catholics of Taiwan - they will continue to be in good hands, despite ties to the government becoming unofficial.

As for China being Satan incarnate, I have to say Satan’s not doing a very good job. While the communist government officially frowns on religion and superstition, the success of capitalism has made such policies much less important to the ruling class. Missionary work is widespread, and the underground Church loyal to Rome has never been healthier in recent years.

Religion has become less a challenge to the Party’s existence, and more a question of how to manage this social issue. Hopefully, Party leaders will soon realize that it is preferable to accept a “foreign” church as part of the religious culture of China, rather than have Catholics view their government as interfering with their faith.

How disappionting, severing ties with a free society to make nice with one that hates Christianity and is planning a devestating invasion of that very same free society.

And also, is it true that the Patriotic Catholic Church in China has to go along with the Communist line on ABC and abortion?

Communists forbid PCC to teach official Church’s view on ABC and abortion.
I have posted an article from lifesite on this

If the PCC does not teach the official Church doctrine on ABC and abortion, then what do they teach on it. For example, if someone were to ask a question of a priest on whether or not it is a sin to use ABC or to have an abortion, would the Patriotic Catholic priest then say no it is not a sin in China?

Pope John Paul II must be rolling over in his grave. Abandoning the Tiawanese for the Chinese communists. After all the work the Church did to free Poland. What cowards, what traitors! The Holy Spirit will protect the Church, but we may be in for some rough times. How would you like to be a Taiwanese Catholic right about now? Will B16 wail at their funerals when China invades?

I am disgusted.

I don’t know but what do you expect when you ask Paul Martin or John Kerry this question?

If Vatican sever ties with ROC now, all underground priests/bishops’ in PRC suffered for nothing.
I’m wondering what Vatican’s stance is if PRC invades ROC.

Is this on topic? I thought that the topic was about the Vatican quitting Taiwan and then initiating ties with Communist China. I was interested in the question of what a Patriotic Chinese Catholic priest would say if he were asked about whether or not it would be a mortal sin to use artificial birth control in Communist China. Already we heard that the Chines Communist government forbids these priests from contradicting the Communist party line on the issue of birth control and abortion. I don’t see where what Mr. Kerry would answer to this question would be relevant to the topic at hand?

No need to be aggressive.
I only mean they may well answer the same way Kerry or Martin answer it.
Answering that question by quoting communist party line would be stupid.
I have never met a PCC priest. there’s no way I know the answer
