Vatican Recalls Ambassador to Ireland Over Abuse Report

A spokesman for the Vatican said the recall of the nuncio, Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza, was a rare move that “denoted the seriousness of the situation,” as well the Holy See’s “will to deal with it with objectivity and determination.”

The spokesman, Rev. Ciro Benedettini, told reporters that the archbishop would return to Rome to consult with Vatican officials who are preparing the Holy See’s official response to the Irish government to the report, but added that the decision “does not exclude some degree of surprise and disappointment at certain excessive reactions.”

Last week, the Irish prime minister, Enda Kenny, denounced “the dysfunction, disconnection, elitism, and the narcissism, that dominate the culture of the Vatican to this day,” in a speech that represented the government’s sharpest ever direct attack on the Catholic leadership.

As I said on another thread, I doubt there will be many tears shed in Ireland over this.

Ireland currently doesn’t have an ambassador to the Vatican, following the retirement of Noel Fahey last month. There are many here who would consider it no great loss if he was not replaced and the Irish ambassador to Italy asked to handle his duties.

For the record: the Papal Nuncio to Ireland has the honorary title of Dean of the Diplomatic Representatives to Ireland. It seems unlikely that that title will continue either.

I agree. I’ve heard more dismay about this in here in America than with family and friends back in Ireland.

There is zilch dismay… more a ‘good riddance’ and ‘don’t send him back’. Just last week there were calls for him to be expelled.
