For some reason this line of thought brings to mind how when the Moslems were threatening Constantinople, the Patriarch of Constantinople created a separate patriarchate for Russia, which is why we now have the Russian Orthodox Church headed by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. It was his way of ensuring that if the Moslems DID conquer Constantinople, then the Orthodox faith would still survive. As another poster has pointed out, this may be a move toward creating smaller patriarchates. If we were to create them, then each patriarch would also have a certain degree of liturgical freedom. This would calm some of the anxieties of the Asians, Africans and South Americans. We’re not speaking here of the descendants of the Europeans, but the indigenous Catholics.
I don’t know who knows, because there was no big announcement as to why. That being said, he remains the Vicar of Christ. Recent popes have also stopped using the tiara and Benedict has taken it out of his coat of arms, indicating that they are dropping the monarchic paradigm. Our blessed Pope Benedict is indeed the vicar of Christ and the successor of St. Peter.I honestly don’t know what to think about him removing this title though I guess it is a good thing.

It was removed in 2006. This news story is three years old!Pope Benedict has removed the title ‘Patriarch of the West’ from his long list of titles. How interesting.

“Cardinal Achille Silvestrini, retired prefect of the Congregation for Eastern Churches, told the Italian news agency ANSA that the deletion was a “sign of ecumenical sensitivity” on the part of Pope Benedict.”.
I hope his decision helps toward reunification.
