In its response, the Vatican recognized and expressed sorrow for the gravity of the abuse that occurred, which was a crime in civil and Church law. But its response also made it clear that the Vatican in no way hampered or interfered with the inquiry or sought to interfere with Irish civil law. The missshandling which occurred was the responsibility of the officials of the local diocese in Ireland.
