VATICAN: US SEMINARIES SIGN OF HOPE FOR NATION

Report on Apostolic Visitation Released

WASHINGTON, D.C., JAN. 15, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Diocesan seminaries in the United States are generally healthy, concluded a letter from the Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education after an apostolic visitation to review centers of priestly formation.
The letter was released this week by the U.S. bishops’ conference. It was directed to cardinals, bishops, major superiors, and all those responsible for diocesan seminaries and religious houses of priestly formation in the United States.
It recognized a breakdown of seminaries in past decades, when a “false sense of freedom was sometimes cultivated, which led to the throwing off of centuries of acquired wisdom in priestly formation.”
However, the visits to individual seminaries from September 2005 to July 2006 found that “since the 1990’s, a greater sense of stability now prevails” mainly due to the appointment of “rectors who are wise and faithful to the Church.”
The visitation reported, “While there are some institutes that continue to be inadequate, the diocesan seminaries are, in general, healthy.” …

I think this is good news. I feel that there is a gradual return to holiness happening in the U.S. Catholic Church. YAY! :clapping: I think it is because of Pope John Paul II , EWTN, Catholic radio and websites like this one. 😃

The article mentions “religious” seminaries that seem to have some problems. What would be some examples of those. Were specific examples given as to where these seminaries were?

I am just curious, I happen to know someone at St. Meinrad in Indiana. It is Benedictine. Some pretty liberal ideas float around there-at least they used to. Hopefully it is improving because I am always shocked to hear some of the comments made about issues and church teachings.

I’ve had occasion to discuss with priests who were trained at OMI seminaries and have likewise noticed serious dissension from Church teaching: not teaching that abortion is wrong because it wouldn’t be pastoral; giving Communion to non-Catholics because to refuse wouldn’t be pastoral; etc.

A religious seminary would be a Benedictine seminary or a Franciscan seminary etc. These are different than the diocesan seminaries.

The report said that in religious seminaries they often have lay people who make snide, off-the-cuff remarks about some Catholic doctrines and teachings. However, the diocesan seminaries seem to be moving in the right direction.

One wonders what they thought about Catholic Theological Union.

Honestly - I disappointed by how the review was conducted. When we were first alerted that a secret review was going to come down I thought that meant that a private eye, undercover agent thing would happen. What good was the effort if everyone in each of the seminaries was alerted to the visitation?
Hasn’t anyone heard of “When the cat’s away, the mice will play?”

Realistically, in an environment like a seminary, how easy would it be for someone to be undercover? It might be quite possible to keep one’s identity secret from the seminarians but it would still require the knowledge of the powers that be.

Well, we sent in Msgr. Maxwell Smart to do the investigation, but he missed it by that much, Chief!

Krushchev said “We will destroy you from within.”
Years ago, the leftist radicals started infiltrating all levels of our American life, including the churches. There were seminaries where homosexuals formed cliques and harrassed the straight students. It was from classes of the 60’s that many of the priest/abusers came.
Our public schools are in the grip of the socialists who are training our children in immorality and dependence on the state.
We have to stand up for the teachings of the church especially in this modern death culture.
