Vatican City - A top Vatican official said Thursday Muslims should be allowed to build new mosques in Italy, where the country’s interior minister, citing terrorism fears, is pushing to ban such initiatives.
On Wednesday Interior Minister Roberto Maroni a member of the anti-immigration Northern League party, proposed a moratorium on the building of mosques following the arrest of two Moroccans suspected of planning a series of bomb attacks.
But Monsignor Gianfranco Ravasi who heads the Holy See’s culture department, suggested such a ban would be counterproductive.
“A place of worship if used as such, is always a source of communion and dialogue,” Ravasi was quoted as saying by the ANSA news agency.

It remains a fact that the muslim population in europe is growing rapidly… Do muslims, because they follow a different faith, not deserve a place to worship?

I think Christ’s model for us, is to love our “enemies” (though I would hardly call the muslim PEOPLE my enemies… the system of belief as opposed to Christ, yes, but not the people.) I think by demonstrating charity in this instance, it is showing that we are not an oppressive people, but that we have charity towards others. Even someone who does not worship Christ, may still be Christ in our lives.

I like to think of mother theresa, and how she saw the face of Jesus in every person she encountered:)

This is a good Christian example. However I suspect this act of kindness will not be returned.

Do Muslims deserve a place to worship? yes

Will Muslims use it only as a place of worship? we hope so

Will Muslims use it to differend goals? could be

Will Muslims, once a large minority, start raising their voices in demands that conform with Islamic sharia? yes.

Will Muslims start challenging the culture they live in, will they attack what they do not believe in? maybe not all but there surely will be.

Will there be fanatics who believe the whole land must be Islamic and run by Muslims? yes

Should we, in the name of charity, open the doors to all these risks? should we, in the name of sharity, open doors to ideologies that oppose our culture, and belief, and goals since Islam is not an individualistic religion but an ideological system?
In the middle East we learned the lesson.

Well no, neither is Christianity! Not orthodox Christianity anyway.
but an ideological system?

No, because we did nothing of the sort. The Muslims conquered the Middle East from two absolutist empires, one of which persecuted all Christians and the other persecuted the “wrong” kind of Christians. In neither case did Christians generously invite Muslims as a gesture of hospitality.

I share many of your concerns about Islamic immigration in Europe, but the fact is that your historical analogy doesn’t work.

No, we shouldn’t open the doors to those risks. Not a day passes that we don’t hear of some atrocity by the religion of “peace”.

Thank goodness the plot was discovered before it could be put into action! Allowing more mosques to be built is akin to making a poacher a gamekeeper or letting the fox into the henhouse. When will they learn that allowing that will only bring chaos! Why don’t people wake up to the Islamic threat!

Have we lost our spines? Moslems kill and torture Catholics and other Christians around the world, they destroy our Churches, so we allow them to build in our backyard? Appeasement does not make your enemies like you; it emboldens them.

I spent some time in Italy and i can tell that many if not most of the Muslims ( mostly from Maghreb and Egypt) don’t integrate and don’t even speak Italian, and Italians avoid being around them or even around the zones they gather in for many reasons. Surely not all are like them, after all the convert to Christianity who went public was a journalist, but this sample of immigrants is enough to raise questions.

Aren’t Christians called to challenge their culture? Aren’t they supposed to deliver us unwashed, multi-culturalist, heathens back to Christianity and get all the nude dancing clubs out of the cities?

I don’t recall your Christ saying that guarantees should be issued prior to doing good deeds. In fact, I’m pretty sure the 9 lepers that didn’t return to say thank you did not relapse into leprosy.

Europe needs its immigrant population. Most of the nations have made no effort to integrate the immigrants into their nations. Many of the nations, for instance, do not have birth right citizenship like the US does, so children and even grandchildren of immigrants may not be citizens of the nation in question.

Europe would be aging too quickly without immigration. Take a look at Japan if you want to see what happens when a nation has a low birth rate and an unwillingness to host immigrants for fear of them changing your culture. One of the things that truly blesses the US is that we have a large neighbor willing to send immigrants that has a very similar culture (same religion, same morals, same holidays, and many similar customs) to it.

.
Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.

charity does not mean not preserving yourself, your belief, your culture, your safety, charity doesn’t mean you must not be vigilent and sober to avoid greater trouble.

How exactly do you protect your culture? It’s probably because I am a citizen of the US but, to me, culture is defined by the people present and actually living at any given time. So if Moroccans make up 20% of the population of Italy, Italian culture would naturally be about 20% made up of Moroccan culture.

Culture does not have a democracy of the dead. It’s strictly about who’s present at any point in time. Again, I suspect that this is a uniquely American perspective here.

If 2 cultures do not oppose, there is no problem, that’s not what am talking about. I am talking about an ideology. Say, for example, Christians and Muslims in one country, Muslims want to annihilate the neighbouring Jews, and Christians don’t want wars; obviously, if Muslims go to war, Christians will pay as well, though they do not share/agree with Muslim’s ideologies. This is one example where an ideology can ruin others who do not share it.

Thank God the Vatican seems more level headed than to attempt to ban a particular religious house of worship.

Also I read that Saudi Arabia is contemplating allowing a Catholic church to be built. John Paul respected muslims of peace, as does Benedict. Needless to say respect does not equate with agreement.

No matter what people say Islam as it is correctly taught is a peaceful religion, unfortunately they are overrun with heretics at this time.

Catholics should take the highest moral ground

Feanor, where was this religion of peace when Muhammad’s immediate successors launched offensive wars on other lands and either converted them, killed them, or subdued them?
