Vatican Speaks Up at U.N. Human Rights Council

States have the right and duty to regulate people’s behavior, including some sexual behaviors, a Vatican official told the U.N. Human Rights Council.

“A state should never punish a person or deprive a person of the enjoyment of any human right based just on the person’s feelings and thoughts, including sexual thoughts and feelings. But states can and must regulate behaviors, including various sexual behaviors,” said Archbishop Silvano Tomasi, the Vatican’s representative to U.N. agencies in Geneva.

The idea that the state must regulate behavior can lead to tyranny. That’s what happens with socialist governments. The state should regulate behavior in the sense of upholding moral laws and punishing or restricting those who violate them,but it should not punish or restrict behavior that is not immoral or dangerous to society. The Church should not trust the state to enforce moral behavior or the common good. The more that the state is empowered with rights and responsibilities,the more it will subvert the rights and responsibilities of the people and of the Church.

Yes, and not regulating anything can lead to anarchy. Not regulating moral behavior can lead too moral decay and collapse. Regulating everything is tyrrany. I thinkg this statement makes clear that God’s way is not Man’s way, or the American Way.
