Now that the summit is underway, perhaps it is a good idea to have a separate thread with news about what is going on at the summit and what the end results are.

Here is a link with the full text of Pope Francis’ opening address, as well as the 21 points of reflection he distributed to all the attendees:

The pope’s comments are brief, but to the point:
Dear Brothers, good morning!

In light of the scourge of sexual abuse perpetrated by ecclesiastics to the great harm of minors, I wanted to consult you, Patriarchs, Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, and Religious Superiors and Leaders, so that together we might listen to the Holy Spirit and, in docility to his guidance, hear the cry of the little ones who plead for justice. In this meeting, we sense the weight of the pastoral and ecclesial responsibility that obliges us to discuss together, in a synodal, frank and in-depth manner, how to confront this evil afflicting the Church and humanity. The holy People of God looks to us, and expects from us not simple and predictable condemnations, but concrete and effective measures to be undertaken. We need to be concrete.

So we begin this process armed with faith and a spirit of great parrhesia, courage and concreteness.

As a help, I would share with you some important criteria formulated by the various Episcopal Commissions and Conferences – they came from you and I have organized them somewhat. They are guidelines to assist in our reflection, and they will now be distributed to you. They are a simple point of departure that came from you and now return to you. They are not meant to detract from the creativity needed in this meeting.

In your name, I would also like to thank the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the members of the Organizing Committee for their outstanding and dedicated work in preparing for this meeting. Many thanks!

Finally, I ask the Holy Spirit to sustain us throughout these days, and to help us to turn this evil into an opportunity for awareness and purification. May the Virgin Mary enlighten us as we seek to heal the grave wounds that the scandal of paedophilia has caused, both in the little ones and in believers. Thank you.

I see the task at hand is to examine “In light of the scourge of sexual abuse perpetrated by ecclesiastics to the great harm of minors” and “seek to heal the grave wounds that the scandal of paedophilia has caused”.

minors and paedophilia

While I do not in any way mean to criticize the Holy Father or anyone else at the summit, I also wonder why the reference solely to ‘minors’ and ‘paedophilia’ and not inclusive of women and of homosexual abuse. Considering that it is not that long ago (and certainly well within the scope of being considered at this summit) that we became privy to the great numbers of abuse cases of young adult men in seminaries, as well as quite recently to the ‘secret rules’ for priests who fathered children, and since there have been several gatherings by the bishops throughout the world, especially since 2001, addressing abuse of minors and the subject of paedophilia, such that in the US at least the rate of abuse since that time is nearly nil, and considering that in November 2018 the bishops who were about to meet to address the sexual abuse (including the recent seminary scandals) were told to stop the meeting and wait until this February 2019 summit. . .why in heaven’s name is the topic of homosexual abuse by priests and abuse of women so conspicuously absent?

So no recognition of scandals like McCarrick?
One of the proposals is to establish procedure for accysations against bishops. We’ll have to see what they do with that one.

May they use this as a guidelines- Catechism of the Catholic Church890 “The mission of the Magisterium is linked to the definitive nature of the covenant established by God with his people in Christ. It is this Magisterium’s task to preserve God’s people from deviations and defections and to guarantee them the objective possibility of professing the true faith without error. Thus, the pastoral duty of the Magisterium is aimed at seeing to it that the People of God abides in the truth that liberates. To fulfill this service, Christ endowed the Church’s shepherds with the charism of infallibility in matters of faith and morals…”

I am not sure if they have stated their rationale in this regard. I know that sometimes it can help to be more focused and less broad. And the abuse of minors is especially heinous, so it makes sense to focus on that first if one is picking and choosing.

With adults, while all cases involve sin and a breach of celibacy, some of those cases do involve consensual relationships. Even though that is also wrong, I can see why they might not want to lump those situations together with the abuse of children.

Though cases like McCarrick, who used his position to prey upon those who were just barely “legal” and over whom he held authority, do seem to share more in common with abuse against minors than a priest who is having an affair with a woman his own age.

I definitely want to see them tackle all forms of abuse and sexual impropriety. I guess we shall have to wait and see what comes of this. I don’t think Pope Francis is wanting to let people like McCarrick off the hook or anything.

Hopefully, it takes steps to lower the likelihood of such accusations and not just focus on how to deal with them when they arise.
