Vatican wades into sex education for young people

Vatican City, Aug 24, 2016 / 05:09 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The Vatican recently rolled out a new sex education course designed to help parents and educators talk to teens about sex and counter messages on social media.

The course, published by the Vatican Council for the Family, and called “The Meeting Point: The Adventure of Love,” aims to promote a dialogue between young people and their parents and teachers regarding sexuality.

The program was developed as one step toward answering the problem of the deterioration of marriage and the family put forward at the Sept. 2015 World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia and the Oct. 2015 Vatican Synod on the Family.

More dialogue between teens and their parents and educators would help to correct some of the errors and misconceptions being pushed by television, music, and other popular media, not to mention by their peers.
 
Thank you for posting this. Any help parents and educators can get to help them counter the wrong and negatives messages, and images, the media is sending out will help.

Young AND older people should be educated about human Plumbing ,
This goes with that , what happened and why it happeneds and Consequences of what can go wrong , rewards of things going right , and not to feel Shame when things happen unexpectedly , it’s all about life , your life and the life of Others

That can’t be catholic? Who gave the go ahead for that programme?

Which unit and lesson are you referring to? The only thing offensive that I saw was a liberal use of the Comic Sans MS font. Other than that I didn’t see anything sexually offensive.
 
I just discovered a Theology of the Body curriculum for kids which looks pretty relevant. Currently high-school only, they are working on making it a K-12. If anyone is interested, they can PM me.

I see that they discuss some advertisements with sexual imagery. This is something that youth are exposed to, and it should be discussed, but we may argue over how or whether such ads should be shown in the curriculum. It’s a good question.

From the Cardinal Newman Society report:

“In order to spark frank discussion about sexuality among high school students, The Meeting Point incorporates sexually explicit images and discussions that are inappropriate, especially for Catholic schools.”

also from the report:

“It is natural and appropriate that older students should learn male and female anatomy at some point, but several images in The Meeting Point are obviously designed for sexual arousal or moral degradation. The authors may hope that students exercise perfect maturity and chastity in responding to the images, but that is an unrealistic expectation for most teenage boys and girls. American children are already bombarded with graphic sexual content; a Catholic educational program does not need to show them more.”

I have received reports on this program and I honestly think that as a young man that has gone through theology of the body, that this program is possibly unnecessary. This is a tough subject to teach to younger people but doing it through, as previously mentioned, showing explicit images and a full length film seems contradictory from what the Church is hoping to achieve. I feel, however, after reading this, some information is missing. Could anyone enlighten me on what I might be missing? If there is a “secret ingredient” to this program that proves its not what it is currently portraying itself as?
