Father Amorth, often, said: ‘practicing yoga brings evil as does reading Harry Potter. They both seem innocuous but they deal with magic and that leads to evil.'
He added:‘Yoga is the Devil’s work. You thing you are doing it for stretching your mind and body but it leads to Hinduism. All these oriental religions are based on the false belief of reincarnation.’

Father Amorth was a deeply traditional figure, Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI, both of whom were reported to have performed exorcisms fully supported him, also with the present Pope Francis. In 2014 the International Association of Exorcists was officially recognized by the Vatican.

The successor to Father Gabriele Amorth, the Vatican’s former chief exorcist for 25 years, has come out in condemnation of fantasy novels and yoga, declaring both to cause demonic possession. Speaking to The Independent (UK), Father Cesare Truqui explained how the Roman Catholic Church has seen a steady uptick in reports of demonic possession all around the world

Is yoga about worshiping Hindu gods, or is it about engaging in advanced stretching and exercise?
At its roots, yoga is originated from the ancient worship of Hindu gods, with the various poses representing unique forms of paying homage to these entities. From this, other religions such as Catholicism and Christianity have concluded that the practice is out of sync with their own, and that it may result in demonic spirits entering a person’s body.

In a recent homily, Pope Francis reminded listeners that practices like yoga aren’t capable of opening our hearts up to God. “You can take a million catechetical courses, a million courses in spirituality, a million courses in yoga, Zen and all these things. But all of this will never be able to give you.freedom”, he explained

The Truth About Yoga

Watch as I expose the satanic deception behind Yoga. Many think it is a harmless form of stretching and exercise. It is anything but that, Yoga is in fact a form of Hindu worship and it is an open door to demons. Yoga is meant to awaken the Kundalini spirit within the individual, a snake spirit said to be coiled around the base of the spine. Once awakened through Yoga stretches, it is said to travel up the spine to the brain and open the 3rd eye, or pineal gland of the individual, which is an occult satanic term used to refer to spiritual vision. Yoga stretches are also pulled right out of the Hindu Vedas (scriptures).

Just FYI, this is at the level of Church Magisterium called “theologoumena” - theological opinions which are up for discussion, IE not settled doctrine or dogma.

Some people hear a famous cleric or saint even say something and mistake theological opinion for infallible doctrine. This is an area where the Church has not imposed strict doctrines or disciplines or officially spoke on.

Hi Spy,

In current Catholic usage, the term “dogma” means a divinely revealed truth, proclaimed as such by the infallible teaching authority of the Church, and hence binding on all the faithful without exception, now and forever. [The Survival of Dogma, 153].
There are two essential elements here: First, a dogma must be divinely revealed. That is to say, it must be found explicitly or implicitly in the deposit of faith that Christ gave the Church. This is found in sacred Scripture and sacred Tradition. If something is to be a dogma, it must be in one of those two places–or in both of them.

Yoga begins with Sun worship, That is breaking of the First commandment which has punishment till the fourth generation down the line
Deuteronomy 4:19

Ezekiel 8:16 And he brought me into the inner court of the house of the Lord; there, at the entrance of the temple of the Lord, between the porch and the altar, were about twenty-five men, with their backs to the temple of the Lord, and their faces toward the east, prostrating themselves to the sun toward the east. 17 Then he said to me, “Have you seen this, O mortal? Is it not bad enough that the house of Judah commits the abominations done here? Must they fill the land with violence, and provoke my anger still further? See, they are putting the branch to their nose! 18 Therefore I will act in wrath; my eye will not spare, nor will I have pity; and though they cry in my hearing with a loud voice, I will not listen to them.”

In 1999 the future Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, then head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican’s enforcer of doctrinal orthodoxy, had issued a document warning Roman Catholics of the dangers of yoga, transcendental meditation and other “Eastern” practices on the ground that they could “degenerate into a cult of the body” that debases Christian prayer.

To be fair, I think most people are only looking for freedom from the everyday aches and pains that a healthy stretching routine can alleviate.

Playing with an ouija board is all for fun, right? We have to remember that we are fighting enemies in the spiritual realm. An open door for them is a tiny crack in our defenses. Once again I must praise the wit and observational skills of French poet and essayist Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867):
“The devil’s greatest trick was to convince us that he does not exist.”

No conflation. Two paths toward the same risk. Does not matter how trendy yoga is. Where it comes from and its purpose is what matters.

What gets me is that a Priest who regularly faces Satan down is now the problem because he’s not totally down with our latest “wellness” regime.

Who in hell is the liar and father of lies, anyway?

For most people in the West, it’s about stretching and exercise. And I have yet to see one documented case of possession arising from stretching your muscles. (Or from reading fantasy novels, for that matter.)

That begs the question.
We are wise not to dismiss Father’s advice out of hand.
Yes. His words should be considered. However, it should also be noted this was said six years ago and the whole thing kind of fell flat. I would say it best to be cautious, avoid that which does not feel right, but not judge others based on a theological opinion. Some priests have expressed differing opinions than this one, at least on Harry Potter, which was a hot topic a few years ago when this came out.

For me, I think fantasy is a great vehicle. It is one of the truest works of creation, in that it not only creates fictional characters, but a fictional world. Like all works of fiction, the story may convey bad morals, or good morals. Lewis and Tolkien have used fantasy to great advantage. Harry Potter, not so much, though there are a few good moral lessons there. I do not think the use of magic is something young children are well equipped to deal with.

@Francis: You said 'Catholicism and Christianity" as if those were separate things. Catholicism is Christianity.

Father Truqui’s opinion should be treated with respect, but it is still his opinion, not a statement of Church doctrine.
Also, how sure are you of what he actually said? What is your source? Lots of people will seize on any statement by the Holy Father or prominent Vatican personnel as an excuse to claim the Church supports this or that position.

We are also wise not to invest a personal opinion with the magesterium. Again, where are the cases of possession caused by simply stretching your muscles?

I read the Rings trilogy every year, and it’s not because Tolkein was a Catholic.

What happens if I secretly slipped my St. Benedict’s medal around an unknowing Satanist?

Is it really any worse than pilates or aerobics? Surely most people just do it as a physical exercise.

We should probably be more concerned with the level of modesty in the outfits folks are doing yoga in…

There is yoga and there is yoga. I have one friend who practices it at temples and goes to India and is involved with it from a spiritual perspective. She is the exception. The vast majority of my friends are like my buddy’s wife who is a yoga instructor and primarily holds classes at rock venues in the daytime with stuff like Iggy Pop blasting on the soundsystem. It’s an exercise class.

I don’t do it myself, but this is primarily because I do not enjoy that form of exercise, not because I’m worried that holding some weird position to music is going to open me up to demons. It might open me up to a sprained back.

Does the Vatican even have a “chief exorcist?” As I recall, Fr. Amorth, who was frequently called that and who made publicity for himself for many years under that title, was not in fact the “Vatican’s chief exorcist,” but was attached to the Diocese of Rome. As such, how is his “successor” the Vatican’s “chief exorcist?”
