Well, there you go. Of course, Jesus is just as present in both forms of Mass. Speaking for myself, I feel out of place uncovered at an EF, and just as uncomfortable covered at an OF. That’s why for me, anyways, it seems to be more of a “cultural” thing for me personally rather than a devotional practice. It seems a little anachronistic to me, and is somewhat similar to looking at my husband as the spiritual head of our domestic “church,” which is just he and myself, and he is a fallen-away Lutheran, so if I followed that teaching strictly, I’d be in a world of hurt.

Veiling, covering, wearing a hat, whatever you want to call it, is an optional practice in the US in 2011. I’m grateful for that, and think it should remain optional. I also think that all of us should be charitable about it–the coverers and the bareheaded should not be criticized by the other camp, and understand that there may be many who spend time in both camps.

It is up to each individual woman on whether or not to wear Mantillas at both the Ordinary (Novus Ordo/local language), and the Extraordinary (Tridentine/Latin) Mass.

“ Thank you for your letter …The wearing of a chapel veil for women is not required when women assist at the Holy Mass according to Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite.
It is, however, the expectation that women who assist at the Mass according to the Extraordinary Form cover their heads, as was the practice at the time that the 1962 Missale Romanum was in force. It is not, however a sin to participate in the Holy Mass according to the Extraordinary Form without a veil. ” - Cardinal Raymond Burke

What’s left to say?
What is the big deal?

a good thing to do would be to veil at all time and not only in the church, as it is a shame for a woman to be uncovered, but taking example of The blessed virgin Mary, whom never showed herself in the presence of men but properly veiled… and women should take that example

Catechism reference?

Uh - yeah. You don’t get away with that sort of claim on this forum, you will definitely be held accountable for where you come up with that. We don’t have a biography of our Blessed Mother, nor did anyone snap a Polaroid of her as she went about her day. ALL we have are artist’s renditions, or images related to us through private revelation.

I’m not suggesting for one second that she was EVER inappropriate or scandalous - ONLY that we don’t know what you claim. I suggest that her covering her head was much more of a cultural norm that has all sorts of stuff balled up with it, than simply and only an action of modesty and piety.

Are you a woman, and do you cover ALL THE TIME? Just curious if you walk the talk. 😉

I’ve seen a few people mention the idea of veiling at all times, so I thought I’d thow in my 2-cents.
I began to wear a head covering (hat, scarf, mantilla) in church as a way to remind myself that the Lord is present in the Blessed Sacrament in a way that He is not present anywhere else. I reasoned that it made sense to acknowledge this Presence differently. Yes, God is present everywhere, by He is uniquely Present in the Blessed Sacrament. Therefore, I will cover my head in the the Presence of the Blessed Sacrament, since that is a tried and true practice which women have legitimately used for a couple thousand years. (If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it:D)
By that same logic, I do not cover my head in the presence of men, because no matter how good and holy they are, they are not God.😛 I reserve covering my head for God alone. Now if our culture was one where an uncovered head would be considered immodest, then obviously covering at all times would be appropriate so as not to create scandal, but that hasn’t been the case in the U.S. for a pretty long time.
I have no objection to women who feel that veiling at all times helps them maintain their modesty, but it’s important to understand the reasoning behind it and to use prudence! (For example, a burka may be modest, but it’s a bit of a health and safety hazard!)

I know of women who are covering at all times as kind of a reaction to the extreme immodesty that our society has embraced. It’s like a counter movement? They have different coverings for Church and outside of Church, which I think is a good distinction to make.

At this point it’s not for me, but I totally understand and respect where they’re coming from.

The day I stop seeing mountains of cleavage at the Mass is the day they’ll stop covering outside of Mass I imagine. 🤷

Just a little something about headcoverings in church in the past. My 80 year old mother was telling me how through her years of growing up why they wore hats and veils.

She said it wasn’t about having something on your head all the time,( like it was a custom or a fashion to wear hats, even though I know some did) because alot of women didn’t wear them all the time. ( I have many pictures of my mother without a hat.) To not veil or wear a hat when going to church, though, would have been considered dishonoring God. She said it was just known that women covered their heads in church to show honor to God.

Yes we should read, but we should intepret in the light of of Church teachings. If there’s a difference between what I think a passage means and what the Church says a passage means, I assume I’m wrong and go with what the Church says:D That applies to doctrine too!

Hi! I used to wear a viel but I felt like I annoyed my Priest and every one else. I didn’t have the courage to do what I knew was right, so I stopped for 2 years. There was this 80+ yr old woman who wore hers, just lately, I talked to her and she explained how she came to and how much it ment to her. It was so lovely. I watched her for a couple of months and I knew I could not deny what I KNEW, so I went to a different church with out my family and I just wore my first veil again yesterday and I felt so in Love with God! I was better able to focus - looking straight ahead. I was uplifted - I was still the only one in 100, but it was RIGHT (for me) and I know I was wrong to give in to “peer pressure” before and won’t do again. When I pray and then Listen, I cannot fail my Lord and my conscience. It is beautifully important for me to veil, in any church! I wear mine from my car into the gathering space and in to the church, I know it makes people uncomfortable but I know it is Right for Me and God. God Bless!
Really nice to read, halx. Thanks for sharing this. 🙂

That’s not really all that cheap. $5.00 in 1971 had the same buying power as $27.59 does today.
Also, it depends on the lace. Not all laces cost the same. Some are more expensive then others. The one your sister brought back from Spain was probably made from really expensive lace. 🙂

Good luck with that. Here on CAF you are expected by most members to back up your claims, not just point someone to go and find it for themselves, regardless of where that may be.
