I am wondering if anyone one can verify this quote from Venerable Bede concerning Easter:
“Eosturmonath has a name which is now translated “Paschal month”, and which was once called after a goddess of theirs named Eostre, in whose honour feasts were celebrated in that month. Now they designate that Paschal season by her name, calling the joys of the new rite by the time-honoured name of the old observance.”
Did he really say that? It’s all over the internet, and I can’t believe the RC actually took the name of a pagan celebration to celebrate the risen Christ.
It is supposedly from “On the Reckoning of Time”, Chapter 15.
Thanks for your help,
Ginger
