Caracas, Oct. 23, 2007 (CWNews.com) - The Catholic bishops of Venezuela have staked out their clear opposition to a set of constitutional reforms proposed by President Hugo Chavez, saying that the proposal “violates the fundamental rights of the democratic system and of the person.”
The people of Venezuela will vote on December 2 in a nationwide referendum to determine the fate of the constitutional reform, which would lower the voting age to 16 and eliminate term limits. The constitutional amendments would also help Chavez to consolidate political power-- a prospect that worries the Catholic hierarchy.

Caracas, Oct. 24, 2007 (CNA/CWNews.com) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has reacted violently to a new document by the country’s bishops criticizing his proposed constitutional reforms, calling the bishops’ stand “morally unacceptable.”
In a statement released last Friday, the bishops of Venezuela used that same phrase to describe Chavez’s proposed reforms. “They are the ones who are morally unacceptable for our people, for our Church, for us Catholics and Christians,” Chavez stated. “These bishops are an embarrassment, and if anyone of them thinks he is the exception let him speak up,” he said during an interview on state-run television.
“It was so sad to hear a bishop, several bishops, lie to the country,” he went on. “May God forgive them for their ignorance and insensitivity!” Chavez screamed.

Wow, listen to good 'ol Hugo. Think of China, then look at the words I highlighted.
😦

I wonder how long it is until he begins a full fledged persecution of the Church there? I’d be surprised if it wasn’t less than a year from now.

By full fledged, I mean what the Roman Empire did and what China currently does.

You’re too late. The persecution of Catholics began several years ago. His most recent target has been the Catholic schools.

I was talking in terms of killing, not just persecution. Hence the Roman Empire and China examples.

Marxist dictators will always persecute the Church, this has always been the case in every marist/socialist nation.

How can Chavez claim to be a Catholic/Christian when he explicitly and openly promotes anti-Catholic/Christian ideologies like socialism?

Socialism has been refuted by an official encyclical from the Vatican almost a hundred years ago.

Clearly this Chavez is just trying to confuse the Catholics/Christians in venezuela using his state controlled media.

Let us all pray that the Catholics of venzuela will not be confused by the dirty tricks and tactics of this Bible-hating totalitarian menace.

Becuase he’s one of those folks that erroneously believe Jesus’s message was socialist.(or pretend to believe)

They will cite how much emphasis Jesus put on the poor and meek.

Passages like this…
Truly, I say to you, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.
…are used to defend their socialist slant on Christianity.

I think that Chavez just wants to preserve wha he sees as his natural right as a dictator–to stay in office as long as he wants. Maybe he’s thinking of Fidel as an example. Term limits? No way!

Exactly. Amazing how people can jump to irrational conclusions.
I charitably assumed you were stating something well-established as true (Venezuelan media supporting Chavez). I have not seen evidence that “the media” in the US support Chavez. Can you provide any?

Venezuela is communist. Let’s see, they angry about Pat Robertson suggesting that we removed Chavez from power. But they didn’t get angry about Chavez did they? Nope.

If you could provide citations to support your claim that “the media” in the US support Chavez, that would be helpful. I’m not sure what Pat Robertson has to do with this.

"You can be arrested and not charged, you can be arrested and have no right to counsel," said Belafonte, who called President Bush “the greatest terrorist in the world” during a trip to Venezuela two weeks ago. Belafonte, 78, made that comment after a meeting with Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez.
