I say that we refer to all people by the name which they prefer. So what say you: how do we refer to married women who retained their maiden name? Mrs. or Ms.?
Riiiight…because why should they get to choose their names. It makes so much more sense for you to choose for them. Not.Your friend and other such-minded women could avoid MUCH confusion if they would just go ahead and take their husbands’ last names.
So priests get to decide what they want to be called, but adult women do not. ???AGAIN, there are exceptions. Difficult last names we wing-it. Priests – they make the rules of their name.
Just out of curiosity, what do you do when the woman in question is an MD? Do you still impose a title of Mrs. on her, or does she get to use her title of Doctor?
And if your old friend Susie Smith becomes a sister, do you allow her to be known by her religious name of Sister Mary Joseph, or – by your rules – does she remain Miss Smith to your children?
It seems to me that names are the most personal things we have, and we get to choose how people use them. If I’m Ms. Someone or Miss Someone or Mrs. Someone or Sister Someone or Doctor Someone…then that’s how you should refer to me. It’s my choice, not yours.
