What’s a “recusant” and how is it different from a hermit?

A recusant was a Catholic who hid their faith but observed catholic practices.Don’t know if I said it right. If you type in English Recusant families, you will find a whole list of names.
Many of these have remained catholic through the centuries despite persecurtion by the english authorities.
