Outraged victims of clergy sexual abuse, alleged and proven, accused Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley yesterday of protecting some predators by omitting them from a new list of nearly 160 priests and deacons accused or convicted of molestation.
Robert Perron said he was abused from age 9 to 11 by a priest who died in 2002 and whose name is not on the list.
“I think that’s outrageous,” Perron said. “What happened to me doesn’t count at all.”
Gerald Sypek said he spent part of his childhood in a Jamaica Plain orphanage, where he was allegedly abused by Paul Hightower, whose name also is not on the list, in between the pews of a chapel.
“I kept that secret for 39 years,” he said.
Dead clerics who were publicly accused are on the newly published list, but 62 whose names never reached the public domain are not. Nor are other people who worked in the archdiocese but were not on its payroll.
In an e-mail yesterday, archdiocesan spokesman Terry Donilon referred to a seven-page letter in which O’Malley said he was “acutely aware” of the harm abusive clergy have caused.
“And while I know there will be some who believe our policy changes should go further,” O’Malley wrote, “after careful consultation and consideration of views expressed by so many people and groups, I believe that the changes we are making are appropriate . . .”
