He stated his opinion of the facts, certainly. It is curious that you think, or even he says, that he became Catholic based on Luther. If I became Catholic, it certainly wouldn’t be because of what Calvin or Zwingli, for instance, thought. The fact that I’m Lutheran already indicates that I don’t accept their theologies. In fact, given the choice of being either Presbyterian or Catholic, I’d be Catholic, too.
Well, to be fair, the Reformed (and other Protestants) build on Luther in a way that Lutherans certainly don’t build on any Reformed theologian:D.

I agree that becoming Catholic because of Luther is a bit questionable, but the parallel you make doesn’t really apply.

What gets me when someone says they found God outside the Catholic Church? :ehh: I never knew God was hiding from the Catholic Church or Catholics in general?
For him, he found God outside of the Church. That doesn’t mean God is hiding himself from Catholics. There are many former Protestants on here that say they didn’t find God until they joined the Catholic Church. That doesn’t mean God hides himself from all Christians except Catholics.

Okay, but it is not logical at all. The Church is the Mystical Body of Christ,so how can one “find” God outside the Church?

Come on, Edwin, give me a little leeway. 😉 😃

I may have misunderstood you. I thought you meant “the Catholic church” and in rereading it probably should not have jumped to that conclusion.
It is okay, not a problem. My concern is those ex-Catholics who claim they found God outside the church? How on earth did they believe God and His Church are two separate entities? God is always with His Church.

Remember there are hot, lukewarm and cold sitting among us all. Not everyone that crosses the threshold of a church has a born anew/conversion of the heart experience.
People have some interesting journeys coming to Christ. Mine started after reading some verses in a chick tract. That’s all the Holy Spirit needed to start working in my heart. I ended up having a pretty radical conversion experience on a hot night in Aug. of 73. Changed the life of this old hippie and spared me from a lot of trouble/temptations that surrounded me…

I agree and by all means I hope my statements are not harsh? As a Catholic part of our spiritual works of mercy includes teaching the ignorant.😉

Harsh not at all. Your one of the more level headed I’ve experienced here… I was un churched and transferred into the kingdom of Light. I can easily see God working outside the box (as they say). Whereas some who grow up in a church setting see more of God working inside their box so to speak…No offense intended. grace and peace to you…maranatha

No offense at all and thanks for the compliments.😃 May God Bless you as well.

Exactly. It really irritates me when people say the only reason someone left Catholicism is because they don’t have a grasp on their faith.

I know someone who is an ex-priest. He was a priest for many many years. I was once telling someone about him and I purposely left out the fact that he used to be a Catholic priest. I told that person that this man used to be Catholic and he converted and that person automatically jumped to conclusions and said that this man did not know anything about the Catholic faith and that he was ignorant. He really didn’t know what to say after I told him that this man was a Catholic priest for almost 40 years, and that when he was younger he grew up in the church and was constantly surrounded by priests.

People can say what they want but when it comes down to it he didn’t leave the Catholic church because he was misinformed or ignorant. He also did not leave because he was unhappy or was beginning to hate the church. He left because he finally believed that he found God and the truth outside of the church. He has been bashed by many, but to say it is impossible to leave the Church unless you want to rebel or do not know anything about the faith is very arrogant.
AmateurPianist was responding to me, and I was not trying to imply that the only reason someone would leave Catholicism was due to ignorance. In fact, I was asking if he knew of any conversion stories of people who left Catholicism for objective reasons - because they believe that the doctrines of the Church aren’t true. Do you mind if I ask specifically what it was that your ex-priest friend left the Church for?
