Vilnius Catholics derogatorily portray Jews in holiday parade

VILNIUS, Lithuania - Last month, a samba group in Rio de Janeiro caused an international furor when it announced its intention to participate in the city’s Carnival event on a >float depicting Holocaust victims. After outcries from the Brazilian Jewish community, a judge banned the group from using the float.

Although less well known, a similarly questionable effort to celebrate the same holiday takes place in this city, once known as the Jerusalem of Lithuania because of the breadth and piety of its Jewish community.

During Carnival - or Uzgavenes, as it is known in Lithuania - Catholics from around the world congregate for a feast of foods prohibited during Lent. The festival usually involves a parade or circus, with attendees in masks and costumes. But in Vilnius - commonly known to Jews as Vilna - participants traditionally dress and act “as Jews,” a feat that generally calls for masks with grotesque features, beards and visible ear locks and that is often accompanied by peddling and by stereotypically Jewish speech.

It is a troubling article. I am not so sure that it is really Catholic news so much as it is Lithuanian news. The holiday and its practices are secular in nature, and outside the Church. Participating in Uzgavenes wouldn’t require a person to be Catholic, any more than participating in Mardi Gras does. Moreover, Carnival, Mardi Gras, and Uzgavenes all seem to have practices which go against the Church.

I understand that Uzgavenes is a tradition in Lithuania, but sometimes cultural traditions need to be pruned. A U.S. example might be how Native Americans were portrayed in film and popular culture. Thankfully we are doing better than in the past. The people of Lithuania should also do the same.

This sounds like Borat… lol.

Don’t get me wrong, this is not a good thing to do by any means. But it sounds like what they did in Borat with the “Running of the Jews.” So rediculous…

There has been and is a lot of anti-semitism in eastern Europe.

LOL… that is what I was thinking.

The Jewess is laying Jew egg! Quick children! Smash it before it hatches!

If anything it just makes these people look like idiots. Jesus was Jewish and so was everyone who wrote in the Bible. If they want to do that to Jews, then put a stupid beard and nose on the guy hanging on the cross.
