A viral video on Facebook has been circulating. It shows individuals passing the Host around like a normal piece of bread.

Given the circumstances (a record-breaking 7 million people attended Mass), is this allowed? Thoughts?

No, handing the Eucharist from one person to another is not allowed. However, those people likely meant no disrespect. The gravest sin is those who would pass such video around in an effort to discredit the Church.

Note that I was not referring to the Original Poster of this thread.

And how do you distribute communion to 7 million people? You can’t hardly que up in lined 10,000 deep. I’m sure Jesus can take care of himself. I’m sure he was overjoyed that he had 7 million people who could receive him validly and lovingly.

You DON’T distribute communion to 7 million people unless you have enough priests to ensure proper reverence.

At a certain number of people a Mass becomes a spectacle instead of an intimate encounter in Christ. That threshold was reached far before 7 million.

Things like this are different in the Philippines.

Masses are ALWAYS packed like this.

Crowds and lack of personal space are normal.

Most, if not all, the people receiving communion are good, holy people who have no need to be judged by forum posters on the other side of the world who are more concerned about aesthetics. Filipinos are the most enthusiastic Roman Catholics in the world.

This is definitely not about aesthetics - it is a matter of faith. In the U.S. our bishops have said the person distributing Communion says audibly to **each **person approaching, “The Body of Christ.” This formula should not be altered, as it is a proclamation which calls for a response of faith on the part of the one who receives. The communicant should audibly respond, “Amen,” indicating by that response his or her belief that this small wafer of bread, the wine in this chalice are in reality the body and blood of Christ the Lord.

How would the bishops in your country respond to this?

I have not clicked on this yet, but, thanks for posting it. And in my humble opinion, I do not think it is allowed…:highprayer: :bighanky:

For the sake of HIS SORROWFUL PASSION have Mercy on us & on the whole world! :signofcross:

I’m from Illinois in the good ol’USA, so I think you know the answer to your question.

Praying for them in case any were not “worthy” to receive the Lord is the best solution to this issue.

I agree.

I didn’t notice any signs of disrespect in the video. It was more like eagerness.

If the Bishop of Manila allows this, who am I to question it?

I wonder if Jesus’ Body and Blood were passed from person to person like that in the earliest years of the church. I shouldn’t be surprised, and if it was, it cannot be an intrinsic evil but only a matter of local custom.

Even if disrespect was not intended, that does not mean it was not disrespectful.

You don’t have to partake in Communion at Mass. With crowds like this, Communion should not be dispensed.

For us may be disrespect but no for them. The centre of the Mass is the Eucharist, and everyone shoul receive Communion. How I wish in my community everybody would be as eager to receive Jesus. I think He was happy, because nobody intended to be disrespectful.

Simply calling it a “viral video” does not make it so. It only has some 3,000+ views. If it were truly “viral”, it would have millions. 😛

Yeah, I don’t think we need to set ourselves up as the liturgy police for papal Masses. We self-appoint ourselves to such positions at our own peril.

That is exactly the wrong way to approach the Lord or lords and King of kings in the Eucharist.

No, I’m pretty sure that sacrilege is actually NOT the normal way of doing things on the Philippines.

I found that scene strangely heartening. It reminded me of the original crowds clamouring for a piece of Jesus. The children who wanted Him but were being told to go away. The woman with the hemorrhage trying to touch His cloak. The Canaanite woman wanting Him to come and heal her daughter…

*"The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said.

He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

“Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment."* Matt 15 25-28

Great faith is always rewarded.

Great faith is always rewarded.
Thank you.

Domine, non sum dignus ut intres sub tectum meum, sed tantum dic verbum, et sanabitur puer meus. - Centurian

Lord, I am not worthy that you come under my roof, but only speak the word and my servant will be healed.

Best spiritual communion prayer there is.

Agree! I don’t believe any intended disrespect. But how does one grab the Eucharist and self-communicate while still honoring the reality of WHO it is we are receiving?
