Hey guys,

Recently I said that I had a lot of questions so I figured I’d see your take on it. I was reading some of the fundamental beliefs of the Church and seeing how my conscience felt towards them. Most of the Nicene Creed, I’m still pondering, but there was one statement that struck me as a bit…absurd.

**We believe…He was born of the Virgin Mary **

I don’t mean to come off as controversial at all. I was just wondering if I could get some explanation to this. I don’t have a problem with Catholicism, I just want to figure it out. My point here is…**any woman who is having or has had children is not a virgin. It is a biological impossibility. **

Could someone explain this belief to me…

Thanks. 👍

This might be a place to start understanding. This is from the Catechism of the Catholic Church:
437 To the shepherds, the angel announced the birth of Jesus as the Messiah promised to Israel: "To you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord."32 From the beginning he was “the one whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world”, conceived as “holy” in Mary’s virginal womb.33 God called Joseph to “take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit”, so that Jesus, “who is called Christ”, should be born of Joseph’s spouse into the messianic lineage of David.

We mean that she was a “virgin” in the sense that she never had any sexual intercourse with a man. Notice in her conversation with the Angel, she says, “how can this be, since I do not know man?” Meaning, she was not intending to have sex.

You are right that there is a distinct biological difference between a woman who is having a baby, and one who has never had a baby. But this isn’t what we are referring to when we speak of Mary being a virgin.

I think it is possible. There were other virgin births in mythology.

I seem to remember in the news a few months ago something about a virgin birth of a shark.

With today’s technology, virgin birth can happen anytime. So, it’s possible today without a doubt.

The act of bearing a child is not what removes virginity.

Read the first chapter of St. Luke’s Gospel.

NOTHING is impossible for God.***

So are you suggesting that she had an artificial insemination to get pregnant?

I agree. I’m just wondering how she got pregnant if she was a virgin…

All right, thanks guys.

I suppose that this is just a matter of faith. I was always taught that the only way to get pregnant was for a man and woman to come together. Either that or have an artificial insemination.

The answer to christian mysteries are “God just did it” from what I can see. Challenge that, and you may get someone that will say something like “there are none so blind” and that kind of thing.🤷

more or less.
No, in fact, not at all. God (who is the essence of life) entered Mary’s womb and became Man. There was nothing artificial about it - nor was there any semen - thus, no “artificial insemination” whatsoever. 🙂

Eggs pop from the ovaries … and go down tubes to uterus every month. God supplied the Masculine biologic essence … by miraculous means. Do you believe in miracles ?

Is a miraculous birth impossible for the creator of life ?

So are you suggesting that she had an artificial insemination to get pregnant?
No - she conceived of the Holy Spirit. It is a miracle. She never had sex with anyone.

Also - there is nothing to say that she delivered the Christ Child vaginally. Some consider that when she gave birth that He did not pass through the birth canal, but was brought out of her womb in a miraculous way. I do not believe there is any official position on this however.

The Church doctrine is that she remained virginal before, during, and after His birth. HOWEVER, there is no clear definition of what “virgin” means, that it does not necessarily mean her hymen remained intact.
