Virgin Mary apparitions at Green Bay-area shrine recognized as first in U.S.

Approval puts Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help in same category as Lourdes, Guadalupe and Fatima

A shrine in the town of Green Bay is one of only a handful in the world — and the sole location in the United States — officially designated as a place where the Virgin Mary appeared.

David Ricken, the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay, announced today his official approval of the Marian apparitions at the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help in Champion during a special Mass for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

Bishop Ricken phrased it exactly correctly: “I declare with moral certainty and in accord with the norms of the church that the events, apparitions and locutions given to Adele Brise in October of 1859 do exhibit the substance of supernatural character, and** I do hereby approve these apparitions as worthy of belief — although not obligatory** — by the Christian faithful.”

Like all other Marian apparitions, the faithful are under no obligation to believe any of them. Public revelation - that which we must believe - ended with the death of St. John. Private revelations are not official Church beliefs and can be believed or rejected as any Catholic chooses.

But why not believe in them? What reasons would one not want to, if they do not contradict public revelation, and hence, what every Catholic should and must believe?

That’s entirely up to the individual Catholic, and it was a Pope who said that belief was entirely voluntary. There are those who accept Lourdes, but not Fatima and Garabandal, for example.

Someone may just feel that if something isn’t official Church doctrine, he or she won’t have anything to do with it They have that option.
 
Does this mean that we now have Our Lady of Green Bay? As if Packer fans didn’t have enough things to be crazy about…

This is wonderful but perhaps someone can answer something for me. Isn’t Vatican approval next? Fatima was not only declared worthy of belief by the local Ordinary but also by Rome.

Is there a prayer to our Lady of Good Help? My dad has cancer, and I have been trying to get pregnant for two years. I could really use her help.

St. Gerard is good for babies. My MIL prayed to him and she had eight kids! And, of course, St. Peregrine is good for intercessions regarding cancer, but I don’t know of a specific prayer to our Lady of Good Help.
 
Approval by the local bishop is the important thing. The Vatican may add its approval afterwards. As I recall, in one officially approved apparition of Mary, the local bishop went to the Vatican first to ask what he should do. The Vatican told him that he was the one to investigate–which lead him to go back home and set up a commission to investigate.

  2. I’ll never get this whole private revelation bit. Seems a nice way for the RCC to assert ONE TRUE FAITH! See God still speaks to us. Then if you point out a bit that brings up problems. “PRIVATE REVELATION! PRIVATE REVELATION! DOESN’T COUNT!”

Correct.

There’s a reason for that. "… the influence of the human element still exists. Authentic images and visions are always transmitted to us, in the words of Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, Prefect of the Congregation of the Doctrine of Faith, “through the filter of our senses, which carry out a work of translation…” and “…are influenced by the potentialities and limitations of the perceiving subject” (Cardinal Ratzinger, Theological Commentary In Preparation for the Release of the Third Part of the Secret of Fatima, L 'Osservatore Romano, June 28, 2000).

Unlike Holy Scripture, private revelations are never binding upon the conscience of the faithful. They are a help in understanding the signs of the times and to help live more fully the Gospel.

Private revelations are, however, binding on the person who has received them.
 
Excuse me if I’m being daft, but I’m still clueless as to exactly what the message was…it just seems to say “fatima-esque” didn’t anyone write anything down? Fatima had prophesy and many other things…anything here…or just “girl was praying/people got cured” seems pretty innocuous and boring to me.

Yes, it could seem that way. There have been only 64 Lourdes’ miracles recognised by
the Church in the last 152 years since 1858. Given the thousands upon thousands of pilgrims who have gone there in the hope of a miraculous cure, it’s a miniscule number. There are no “certified” cures that occurred at Fatima.

I guess that those apparitions, for those who accept them, do more to bolster the faith of those people than to prove anything or provide more revelation to the Church.
