Virgin Mary ‘crosses the finish line’ with Olympic gold winner

I saw this last night when it was on prime time coverage and I had to hunt down the story online to get a picture of it. This woman from Ethiopia won the race, and as soon as she did she started fishing something out of her jersey from her chest area. I was wondering what she was doing and then she pulled out this picture of the Holy Mother and Child and started holding it up, crying. I thought it was incredibly beautiful and of course the announcers ignored it. I wanted to get it out and show it around in appreciation of what she did. It made me tear up when I saw it.

I missed seeing it, but my wife told me right away.
***AVE MARIA, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. ***
***Benedicta tu in mulieribus, ***
***et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus. ***
***Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc, et in hora mortis nostrae. ***
Amen.

Does anyone know if that is a particular icon?

I loved how she stuck it right in front of the camera-the announcers may have ignored it but millions of people saw it just the same.

Yest it was wonderful. A least the news reels played it even though they ignored her response to winning. God Bless t hat Ethiopian athlete for what she did.

Too bad there’s no smiley for happy crying or for “that brought a tear to my eye”.

I think this kind of thing is more touching when someone from a country like Ethiopia does it since that’s not exactly the easiest country in which to practise Christianity. Being close to Somalia, Christians in Ethiopia are often targeted in jihad attacks. The fact that this woman hold on to her faith in such circumstances is really remarkable to me, someone who is lucky to live in a place where I don’t have to fear for my physical safety.

The best part was how she was crying and holding it up and kissing it. It was very unexpected and very awesome! The story says she is orthodox christian.

That Usane Bolt runner from Jamaica makes the sign of the cross before each race too.

While I would object if the Olympic formalities included religious observance I think it is entirely appropriate that individuals express their personal conclusions and beliefs in this way. It adds interest, and understanding. Thanks for the pic and the links. They moved me. Mind you I was also impressed with the guy who won his raise and then did a few sit-ups, as if to say: I won because I trained hard! Each to their own I say! 🙂

It is an Our Lady of Perpetual Help icon, apparently. She posted it on her Facebook page.

Also, it’s no surprise that the AP’s captions for the images refer to the icon as simply “a picture.” 🤷

Ethiopia is one of the oldest Christian communities in the World.
Unfortunately, plagued by drought and the ever present Muslim troublemakers.

It is truly meet, to call thee blest, the Theotokos, ever blessed, and most pure, and the Mother of our God. More honorable than the cherubim; more glorious beyond compare than the seraphim, without corruption, thou gave birth to God the Word: True Theotokos, we magnify thee.

I saw quite a number of track athletes crossing themselves before running, great sight

To be honest, my first thought was ‘picture’ not ‘icon’.
