…no rebuttal by us tells these people that Catholics are a subspecies that can be marginalized without retribution. This was the attitude of the Nazis towards the Jews, about which no one did anything, and the end result was millions of Jews AND dissenting Catholics in concentration camps being turned into ashes and worse.
The episode was disgusting but you are blowing it WAY out of proportion. The basis of the show is tasteless, offensive humor and that is what people expect to see on it. No one is going to look at anyone they attack as a “subspecies” nor is it going to lead to genocide.

Ok, i understand why people are so up in arms about this, HOWEVER, South Park is an equal oppotunity offender. It makes fun of everything religion, everybody. I’ve seen them make fun of Jewish people, christians, “cow cults” (you have to see it to get it) and most recently, scientology.

South Park is satirical, and more often than not, what you see on the show and what you get from the message of the show are two different things. Take for example, a christmas episode they made. In the show, the kids are trying to fight a wave a anticommericialism to get presents at christmas. They end up informing the entire town that christmas is about commercialism and presents. The whole town proceeds to buy everything in the all the stores for christmas. The actual message of the episode is that Christmas is not about presents, it’s about being kind, and with being with family etc…

I guess you have to watch it a lot to get it…just trying to add another perspective to the conversation.

I dont mind satire. I dont mind satire poking fun at deities. But I draw my line at Blasphemy. And I really cant find any humor in attacking Mary. No matter what reality we are in, you dont mess with someones mother.

Once again, Devils Advocate: This wouldnt have even happened if God was revealing himself to us in more realistic ways other than making Stautes bleed blood or cry oil or tears. I find it disturbingly bizarre on Gods part to do this, but at the same time, I aint about to mock Mary in any way shape or form.

It’s South Park!!! What do you expect? They take shots at everyone and everything. I actually really like the show and watch it often. If something really bugs me, I pick up the remote control and change the channel. I’m not about to get offended because some juvenile jokesters are “picking” on Mary, Jesus, or God the Father. I’m pretty sure He will have the last laugh, so to speak.

GoldenArrow, Thank you for your post and for taking action. This is my contribution.
Anyone is welcome to use this letter. If Catholics are too laissez-faire to bother to defend the honor of their own mother then they don’t love her very much. I’ll stand up and be called a fool any day for defending the honor of the Mother of God. While one might get away with making fun of God I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near someone picking on His Mother.

Come on; show some spirit and at least try to make this world a better place just for today.

Thanks, I too sent the letter. Let’s hope that this sickness stops. I just can’t stand when they make a mockery of our Faith, and especially our dear Mother.

Peace

The Catholic News forum had a post yesterday on this topic; it appears the battle may have been won. Yahoo reported that the episode scheduled to be re-aired on Wednesday was pulled without explanation. Mr. Califano, who was the focus of this letter writing campaign because he is Catholic, watched the episode and decided to act on the complaints from the Catholic League.

Thank God for tender mercies.

Finally some good news about something for a change! It definitely gives a glimmer of hope that people with good intentions can make a difference by making their presence and objections known.

Is this really good news? Will it be good news if the largely Protestant Christian Right drives EWTN off the air, satellite and cable because of its flagrant blasphemy?

Let’s not forget that we are still a religeous minority in the US and many who are counted as Catholic are actually agnostics. If we can crush dissent, what is to stop the forces hostile to the CC from doing the same to us?

Minority or Majority who gives a rip…can’t we just do the right thing without worring about what may happen.
I try to be kind but it is so HARD!!!

Hi everyone.

I Have recently joined this site and I am glad that I have - I seem to already like the people/discussions here, but most importantly, I can gather information from here and use them to hopefully better the world.

I was shocked at how something like the episode dubbed “Bloody Mary” could be released. It is utterly disgusting. I have forwarded an email to my contacts in order to increase our voice of shock and distress against the episode to the appropriate persons.

I hope to be more involved in other threads soon.

God Bless.

Anthony

jeez, stuff like that just makes me sick…even non-Catholics should be upset! even though Mary may not be held as reverently in other Christian faiths, she is still most certainly the mother of Christ and a beautiful Christian who should be respected and not allowed to be made such a mockery of:mad:

Maybe you are right. American civil liberties are stone dead. I guess there is no harm in savaging freedom of expression now that it no longer exists. We can certainly enjoy ourselves up until the time catholocism is formally criminalized.

When something offensive comes on the TV, I either change the channel or I turn it off. Everyone knows that South Park is an equal opportunity offender. Why would anyone who is easily offended watch more than 5 min of this CARTOON???

I don’t get it. Are TVs being made without on and off button/remotes now?

Well, the EWTN comparison to this episode is absolutely an apples and oranges one. You have to remember we’re talking about something that was blatantly, disgustingly, and intentionally objectionable*. *EWTN doesn’t engage in the same childish behavior. Not even close.

I don’t think I quite understand what you’re worried about, since groups hostile to the Catholic Church have been working against anything Catholic for ages now, except on a much larger and threatening scale.

If you’re worried about the Catholic League’s organizational approach, don’t be…it’s nothing new. If anything, the Catholic League seems to have only adopted methods already utilized by the ACLU, ADL, etc., except for its own defensive (and not aggressive/offensive) purposes.

Please remember, it wasn’t Mary who was defiled, it was a statue of her. Also, the statue indirectly cured Stan’s father of alcolholism. How’s that for positive spin?

“I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” Mt 16:18

I just read what the episode entails and I think you should be ashamed for even suggesting that there is a “positive spin”.

I was listening to Johnette Bencovic this week on “Women of Grace”. She is a big supporter of Catholics defending their faith. This is the scripture she read, "I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead…proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching. For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers and will stop listening to the truth and will be diverted to myths. But you, be self-possessed in all circumstances; put up with hardship; perform the work of an evangelist; fulfill your ministry. " 2 Tim. 4: 1-5

Like it or not, if you have been baptized you are now a brother or sister of Christ and as a member of the family you don’t make clever excuses to exonerate people who make a public mockery of your mother. It is definitely “inconvenient” to put pen to paper for the purpose of reprimanding someone but it is our Christian duty. Catholics are the whipping boy of the media precisely because we let them get away with it.
