It’s so very confusing when we get into the Latria/Hyperdulia/Dulia discussion… all of these can be called worship, but the modern English understanding of worship is for God alone, rather than say, veneration or the giving of respect. Latria itself probably best sums up our modern understanding of the term.
So long as they are giving Hyperdulia to Mary, that is, veneration, it should be fine. They should not, however, be giving either Hyperdulia or Latria to the image itself, nor Latria to Mary.
That being said, I’m not the type to cry Mary or Jesus when I see a grease stain.
