A firearm launching a projectile downrange at high velocity is operating properly. It’s when it doesn’t do so that it is faulty and needs repair.

You fundamentally misunderstand what a right is. The rights outlined under our Constitution are individual rights acknowledged outside the authority of the law that exist for everyone. The second amendment is not explicitly a right to gunpowder-based firearms. It is an acknowledgement of a right to bear whatever arms are used at the time. It is an acknowledgement of the fundamental right to self defense. You would deny everyone the right to self defense because one individual out of millions committed murder. You would similarly deny everyone the right to free speech because one person used it to whip up a lynch mob. You would similarly deny everyone the right to practice their religion because one individual used his religion to kill people he disagreed with. I hope you can see the flaw in your position of treating individual rights as group rights that can be revoked from all because of the violations of one. Because one man misused his right does not mean you deny everyone else their rights. You treat the second amendment as somehow an inferior right to the first. Properly understood, the second secures the first, and all the rest.

Your vegetable and automobile analogies do not even remotely apply to a conversation about rights. They apply to an autocratic state that recognizes only the power of the government and denies the existence of natural rights. Top down, not bottom up.

A similar string of workplace shootings happened in the late 80’s (where we got the phrase “going postal”). Employees who came in and shot up their workplace/former work place killing people.

The despair felt by someone that pushes them to lash out in this ultimate way, it breaks my heart.
 
These shootings are reflective of our narcissistic culture.A perverted sense of being entitled to perceived righteous anger and acting it out n the most violent way possible. :cry:
 
Those are all well and cute suggestions to “fixing” the murder issue. But we have been killing each other since Adam and Eve son Cain, killed able. And it has not stopped.

Sure there are things we can do to prevent this awful and senseless shootings. But it is not a one size fit all.

Pray, get close to God, be an example and bring others to Christ. A ban on weapons will only work for the law abiding citizen. Indoctrination will not work for those who hate truth. How about the extremely violent games and movies? All of this also play with the psyche.

More gun precautions? I am up for that.
More censure of violent games and movies? I am up for that
More teaching about the sanity of life? I am up for that
And most of all, getting closer to God. That is the way.
 
But you can have normal law based on the ten commandments or maybe we would prefer a north Korea type of government. Then there is the radical Muslim types of laws…stoning women, cutting off hands and other atrocities. Then we always have the example of what a Christian nation followed in history…educated folks who went with the flow or got killed…right we all guessed it…Hitler.

WASHINGTON—Bishop Frank J. Dewane of Venice, Florida, Chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, has issued the following statement in response to the tragic shooting at the municipal building in Virginia Beach.

The full statement follows:

“This past Friday afternoon, an horrific act of gun violence took place at the municipal building in Virginia Beach, Virginia. There are reports of at least twelve fatalities, and numerous critical injuries. This shooting reminds us yet again that something is fundamentally broken in our society and culture when ordinary workplaces can become scenes of violence and contempt for human life. As Americans we must deeply examine why these horrific occurrences of gun violence continue to take place in our communities, in order to root out the causes of such evils. Action is needed to attempt to reduce the frequency of these abhorrent acts through legislation and training. I call on Catholics around the country to pray for the dead and injured, as well as for healing in the community.

May Jesus, whose victory over death we celebrate during this Easter Season, bring consolation and healing at this time of great sorrow.”

No, it’s a simple explanation for what a properly functioning firearm, or for that matter, any weapon; bow and arrow, crossbow, sword, slingshot, etc, is supposed to do.

Ok…but I think you aren’t giving yourself enough credit…its a 2fer…speaks of firearm engineering and the most cogent argument against the 2nd Amendment…I salute you for both…hope you don’t take to much grief for those who don’t see things with the clarity on this issue that you do

But we still need some type of gun control which is common sense and
In this area the Democrats are right. No one should have automatic guns except police and military…and I hate any kind of weapon and not a fan of hunting unless for food.

No more than noting that drinking alcoholic beverages can sometimes make you do stupid, careless things that can be fatal is an argument for reinstating the 18th Amendment.

Gun lobbies and NRA reps always, always, always, cite the 2nd Amendment as the reason that there can be no control of guns in the interest of the common good of the country. Always. The world hears the same thing over and over every time.

What is the point of a right that causes more harm and carnage than good? It is the antithesis of the principles of a constitution.
