It’s been a long ride from Sandy Hook, and if there was no ramifications after that Good Lord only knows what it will take.
The perpetrator dying seems like a pretty decent ramification. Who else should there have been ramifications against?
Ask New Zealand.

New firearms laws are now in effect amending the Arms Act by:

** Banning most semi-automatic firearms and some pump action shotguns; and also certain large capacity magazines. There are limited exemptions.*
** Placing controls around who may possess parts of prohibited firearms.*

*There will no longer be a category of firearm known as a military style semi-automatic firearm (or MSSA) and the old “E” endorsement will be obsolete. *

The newly banned items will be called prohibited firearms, prohibited magazines, and prohibited parts. New offences involving prohibited items carry tougher penalties.

Transitional provisions allow for an amnesty until six months after the buy-back is announced so that those in possession of prohibited items have time to notify Police and can hand over their firearm/s to Police at a later stage when we advise of that process.

I would suggest a look at what our Holy Father says…but then again I’d be referring to Christians, unselfish ones at that.
Well, the Swiss Guard have guns. They have retained their weapons despite an unfortunate incident in 1998.
And again, gun control countries don’t take guns away from the police, military, security personal. If that is one of your arguments you’ve been eating up the propaganda (lies) of the gun lobby.

America is a violent culture,
this is the real issue. america stopped teaching morals and violence filled the void. the tool doesn’t matter, another will always be available
Guns are made for one thing. To kill. period.
half-full glass

they are made to defend: against those who will try to harm you
No one should have automatic guns except police and military…and I hate any kind of weapon and not a fan of hunting unless for food.
who has automatic guns? they are highly regulated
Gun lobbies and NRA reps always, always, always , cite the 2nd Amendment as the reason that there can be no control of guns in the interest of the common good of the country. Always . The world hears the same thing over and over every time.
there are thousands of gun laws on the books, what is the magic next one that will work?
What is the point of a right that causes more harm and carnage than good? It is the antithesis of the principles of a constitution.
guns are used in self-defense between 500,000 and 3 million time a year
In particular, a 2013 study ordered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and conducted by The National Academies’ Institute of Medicine and National Research Council reported that, “Defensive use of guns by crime victims is a common occurrence”:
Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million, in the context of about 300,000 violent crimes involving firearms in 2008. are you sure?
Figures released to Newstalk ZB by the New Zealand Police showed that, as of Sunday night, only 530 guns had been handed in since the ban on semi-automatic guns was finalised in early April.

There are around 250,000 licenced firearm holders in New Zealand and it’s estimated as many as 300,000 guns could now be illegal.

There is an additional American angle on this as well. Private gun ownership in the US has been linked tightly with white supremacy. Historians have done a wonderful job of uncovering how this has worked over time. In essence, guns in the hands of white people have been used as a tool of subjugation in various ways (most of which do not involve direct violence, merely the possibility of violence) against non-white groups. You can’t honestly discuss US culture without a discussion of race, it is just too central to American identity. This is kind of deep for this kind of forum, and I don’t think a forum post could possibly do this point any justice I’ll throw a few sources here:

You’ve been fed propaganda (lies) by the gun lobbies if you use this argument.
If that is one of your arguments you’ve been eating up the propaganda (lies) of the gun lobby.
Likewise you’re being fed Propaganda by the Gun Control Lobby.
No. Mine were provable facts. There are loads of champion shooters from gun control countries. And the official defense authorities are not disarmed by gun control in every gun control country. That is not propoganda. Those are facts.

You asked who has automatic guns? I know nothing about guns, just water guns…thought magazines meant automatic …anyway the root of this issue is we have (Some of us that is) become a culture of death so the rotten fruit will continue until this nation and other nations respect human life.

My original post, if you’d read it, was countering the false assertion that guns are only meant for killing. I’m not sure how your random statement is applicable here.
And the official defense authorities are not disarmed by gun control in every gun control country.
Thankfully, we have the 2nd Amendment. There’s nothing wrong with an armed citizenry.

I’m even more cynical of the underlying agenda. The fact is that US arms manufacturers reap billions in arms sales. They are the top arms traders in the world selling both domestically and internationally. Gun control and arms trading restrictions directly affect their billions. It is an industry most served by a violent domestic culture and international strife between countries.

No more than noting that drinking alcoholic beverages can sometimes make you do stupid, careless things that can be fatal is an argument for reinstating the 18th Amendment.
And within this same line of thought, we’ve made it costly, difficult, and extremely hard to maintain the privilege of driving if that stupidity took place behind the wheel of car while DUI!~

It took a while but Mothers against Drunk Drivers in adjunct with civility and common sense was a force to be reckoned with, ultimately tougher laws were enforced. We’ve evolved since before the 80’s, the time for tougher gun legislation is on the horizon and within reach…it’s disrupting the lives of families and taking the lives of children. One would have thought Sandy Hook was enough, but the Devil is shrewd!~!~

I’m hoping Democrats decide to put politics aside and eliminate “gun-free” zones because these are soft targets for the bad guys.
CPRC examined mass public shootings for the time period of 1950 to May 2018 and found that 97.8 percent of them occurred in gun-free zones. Yet Democrat politicians respond to these shootings by pushing laws that make it even harder for law-abiding citizens to be armed to shoot back.

So against people who had nothing to do with the actual shooting?

what have we accomplished? in 2016, 10k + deaths, 1 million people arrested!

our drunk driving laws didn’t stop the killing, people still get behind the wheel drunk!

from the CDC
  • In 2016, 10,497 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for 28% of all traffic-related deaths in the United States.1
  • Of the 1,233 traffic deaths among children ages 0 to 14 years in 2016, 214 (17%) involved an alcohol-impaired driver.1
  • In 2016, more than 1 million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics.3 That’s one percent of the 111 million self-reported episodes of alcohol-impaired driving among U.S. adults each year (figure below).

When someone looses their capacity altogether to get behind the wheel of a car due to tough DUI laws, they can continue to drink their problems away and potentially kill themselves but their ability to do so behind the wheel of a car has been removed. For those that have killed behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated they’ll see prison time. The time for thoughts and prayers before drunk driving laws are over.

The laws enacted caused even the hardest alcoholics to think before getting behind the wheel of the car, and have caused bars and alcohol serving establishments to think before serving up another drink as well.

really?

10k+ deaths
1 million arrested

from your article (bold mine)
drunk driving remains one of the deadliest risks drivers face on the road. For some reason, despite decades of public service campaigns, many drivers still feel it’s ok to get behind the wheel after tossing back a few dollar margaritas after work at Applebee’s.

Tougher State Drunk Driving Laws Actually Save Lives: Study
the article calls for a tougher 0.05 blood alcohol law, not the current 0.08 blood alcohol law. the link for study didn’t work

drunk driving laws shows making laws to stop bad behavior doesn’t work. yes, it will stop the good guy and some positive results will occur but the drunk will still get behind the wheel.

So against people who had nothing to do with the actual shooting?
That’s a strange way to reason. Mandating pool fencing as a ramification due to child drownings is not punishing people who haven’t had a child drown. Imposing noise restrictions in the suburbs. There’s always some who can only see it from their own ‘rights’ position and don’t think the public welfare is a good enough reason to have their personal rights limited.

Your personal rights are subordinate to responsibility.

So what’s our responsibility? It’s either none whatsoever or argue over guns rights after every single mass shooting we have in this country? We top the charts in comparison to post industrialized, supposed civilized countries and no one would dare compare New Zealand because they would be forced to comment on their immediate gun laws enacted and effective…hold on…immediately!~

Is this what we want to be famous for? Abortion outlawed but no restrictions on guns, after mass shooting rampages have taken out hundreds of innocent men, women and children civilians in short periods of time…we live in perpetual bloody warfare on our own soil and don’t even realize it, or just don’t care. What’s it going to be?
