Yes. There weren’t in ministerial roles in the same way as deacons, but they were there to assist with the women in the Church for administration of the sacraments and such.Were there really deaconesses within the Catholic in the past? I haven’t ever heard this or read about this.
Properly, the roles in the Mass which are filled by “altar servers” are appropriate to those in holy orders (either the minor orders such as lector, acolytle, and subdeacon) or the major ones such as deacon. They were long filled by boys only as a substitute for the lack of those clerics who are ordinarily appropriate to the role. So, even having boys fill these roles is not an ideal but an extraordinary exception of allowance.I also don’t understand what your mean by altar servers taking the place of a cleric? Define cleric?
Under the N.O., these roles and their importance are less well defined and essential. As such, the enablement of females to legitimately fill them.
