Thanks!🙂

Used to be, third order members had to get permission to marry. Such is no longer the case.

There are secular third orders, and “regular” third orders. “Regular” third orders are the religious sisters working out in the world. “Regular” comes from “regula” meaning “rule.” The St. Cecilia (Nashville) Dominicans are an example of Third Order Regular Dominicans.

Do you know which Orders have a 3rd Order? I only know of the Franciscans, Carmelites & Dominicans. I wonder if there are any others.

I have looked for info regarding these. However, every site explains contradictory things. It seems to me that now that lay members of the Church are becoming more active, these will flourish. I had never heard of them until about a year ago!

I am considering…well maybe I should say, opening up to the possibility. I don’t think this is something one can choose oneself…it must come from above, as with any other vocation.

Also, I am divorced, not re-married, for over 15 yrs. My ex- remarried and has a new family.

Will divorce exclude me?

Thanks!

Almost all religious congregations in the Church have secular vocation orders for laity. Even those who aren’t attached to big orders like the Franciscans or Carmelites. One such order is the Intercessors of the Lamb in Omaha, NE. Here is their website:

bellwetheromaha.org/companions/

Their order is called the Companions to the Intercessors of the Lamb.

You have to read up on which charism you feel called to like the Franciscans, Carmelites, Dominicans, etc. I was doing some searching on the web after looking at your profile and found a Secular Franciscan Community in your diocese:

sanpedrocenter.org/secular-franciscans-orlando.php

There is also a Discalced Carmelite Order for the Seculars (laity):

stjosephocds.com/

Here are the Lay Dominicans (St. Martin de Porres community; go down to Florida listings):

domcentral.org/oplaity/laycat.htm#south

I think this is the closest community to you:

St. Catherine of Siena Group
Beth Carkeet, Moderator
517 Inwood Lane
Indian Harbour Beach, FL 32937
(407) 773-0235

It’s about 1 hour from Orlando. 🙂

Divorce should not exclude you since you didn’t remarry. But that is something you would have to ask the Vocation Director of the group.

No, divorce will not exclude you from a third order secular.

Before entering vowed religious life, though, there has to be an annulment.
