It just hit me. I voted Democrat last Congressional elections. My vote wasn’t pro choice; it was an vote against Trump. What just hit me is that voting Democrat May be a mortal sin because the Dems are notoriously pro choice. Even though my vote was an anti Trump vote; could my vote be a mortal sin?

It all depends on who you voted for and why. Just worry about the issues and not the party. Democrats used to be quite different. That’s why Ronald Reagan, for example, switched parties.

We all do need to remember that votes matter, however, and that voting one party in versus another has consequences for a host of moral issues, not the least is the issue of abortion. Sadly for so many of us Americans the two party system means we get rotten eggs no matter what.

I heartily agree. It’s difficult to vote your conscience with the field limited as it is in the American system.

True. That is why Americans should consider third party candidates or to form a third party such as a pro-life Democratic Party or a Moral Majority Party.

I’m not an American, but given the recent news (a push for less abortion restrictions), voting for democrats isn’t just voting for the status quo anymore. It seems to be a vote for more access to abortions. Obviously I’m not saying that you are consciously voting for that.

Both GOP and DNC (?) has their problems, but I struggle with the idea of voting democrat if I’m an American.

I’m an American, and I don’t. Nor have I ever felt any of my votes were sinful.

We make the best choice we can with what we are given.

I don’t automatically vote a straight ticket for anybody.

Abortion is not the only moral issue to consider when you decide how to vote. You may also be concerned about education, healthcare, the distribution of wealth, the environment, foreign policy, investment in infrastructure, and so on. You may consider that on balance you are doing the better thing by voting for a pro-choice candidate whose views better align with yours on every other issue. Politics is never going to be simple.

I live in Great Britain (the situation is somewhat different in Northern Ireland), where all of the major parties take a more or less liberal stand on abortion. Over the years I’ve voted for candidates from the Labour Party, Liberal Democrats, and Green Party, and one time an independent candidate. Probably my biggest concern has tended to be foreign policy, which I know for most voters typically ranks as their least important concern. Taxation and public spending are also typically important concerns for me. When I voted for an independent (who won) it was in protest against the electoral college system used to select the candidate for the ruling party. If I wanted to vote for an anti-abortion candidate I’d have to vote for a candidate from an obscure far-right party who doesn’t stand a chance of being elected and who would also advocate all sorts of dreadful policies.

People talk about throwing away their vote by voting for a truly unviable candidate. I think you really do this with single issue voting.

I don’t think it’s necessarily a sin.

Now with all the talk about late term abortions and democrats trying to avoid the controversy, I would be hesitant unless the candidate is against that or if the opposing candidate is much worse.

It’s not. That’s absurd. I actually created a thread not too long ago on this topic.

Only a far right blowhard would say such a thing.

To the OP’s credit, he simply asked a question. He did not declare that voting Democrat is a mortal sin, nor did he say ‘So-and-so said to vote Democrat is a mortal sin.’

If you voted for them knowing that they support abortion, then it is a mortal sin. You cannot vote for someone who is pro choice and still be in good standing with the church.

No, this is wrong, as has been stated above and on other threads.

It’s your motivation for the vote that matters.

If you voted for someone because they were pro-choice, then the sin is that you yourself support pro-choice.

If you voted for someone who supports pro-choice, but you voted for them because you thought they would do the most to help the poor people and immigrants in your area and to bring jobs to the area, or that the other person running was a corrupt and untrustworthy liar and criminal, then you have committed no sin. You made a good faith choice.

On a general note, people really need to stop telling others that they’ve committed mortal sins on this forum. It’s impossible for us to judge anyone’s state of mind to know a sin is mortal or not.
