Voting Democrat a mortal sin?

In the olden days, women secretly obtained abortions, (e.g. Mom would take the teenage daughter out “shopping” for the day), or were shipped away for nine months, forcibly and permanently separated from their babies, and coming home baby-free. My grandmother told me that there was a saying in the 1920s: The first baby can come any time after the wedding. All subsequent babies take nine months.

STDs like syphilis were rampant and, believe me, don’t spread by monogamous marriage.

Men often had children by their mistresses, or they died young from warfare, disease, or occupational accidents, (mining, railroad, etc.), leaving widowed, single mothers in their paths.

“Traditional families” routinely and legally involved alcoholism, marital rape, and wife-beating.

There were no Good Old Days. That myth makes me shudder, and it’s high time our culture shook it.
Yeah, good thing we don’t have any STIs in this day and age! 🤣

You’re the one bringing up the Good Old Days - - no one else did! The “old days” were better in some ways, worse in others.

I beg to differ. There were a lot of things that were better in my childhood than today. I have many fond memories of the Good Old Days.

Those things happened then and they happen now. Difference is it happens alot more today. Things were better. Our society today has slid way down the hill.

Your entire post rehashes my point. Thank you.

You were waxing nostalgic about fathered families in the olden days. There weren’t always fathers, and people didn’t always have sex within marriage.

I think we all do. But every age comes with its trade-offs. Many things are better about the present, and many are worse. We may disagree on which is which, but thinking of them as Good Old Days is inaccurate. Tell me when you grew up, and I can name things wrong with the era.

Meh, every generation says that. It’s black and white thinking. And it would help us all to enumerate why we’re grateful that God had us born in the time we’re in.

Our crime rates are a lot lower. Technology has been useful to expose corruption everywhere from Planned Parenthood to local police departments. Young people are getting more pro-life. Medical innovations have saved and improved lives.

And frankly, I’m glad to see some stigma lifted so that unmarried pregnant women can now seek compassionate support from Catholics and other Christians rather than hiding in shame from them, quietly seeking abortions, etc.

I’m not a democrat but if I were, seeing the sea of cold stony faces on that side when trump called for passing a bill to outlaw late term abortion during his SOTU would definitely give me pause in voting for them, going forward. The look on those women’s faces made it clear that they would actively fight to keep late term abortion legal. It’s one thing to try to just overlook a candidates being pro-choice when they support so many other good things, but this late term “up until birth” (or after!) abortions are just plain evil. There’s no excuse, ever. In other words, I do think it’s a sin to vote for someone who supports killing babies that could be born alive.

Meh, lots of people say that too. 🙂
As God continues to get pushed out of our society more and more, we only have one way to go. We can’t expect to see more good but more evil.

No, actually the Good Old Days were very good and to say so is very accurate. Those days were truly good. Of course, you could find things wrong with just about anything. I prefer to see the bright side of my past. 😎

All of my past. I’ve been on this earth for 62 years. Of course there is good today. Right now I’m living the Good Old Days of the future.

If you pick up any history book, you’ll see that times of good and times of evil have ebbed and flowed throughout history. Societies claiming to follow God have committed a lot of evil in His name.

Again, it’s not black and white.

Yes that is true. It doesn’t change, though, the truth that as we push God farther away things become worse.

But can you also see that some of those same “good old days” that were good for you, might not have been so good for some members of society.

Nothing is always good for anyone. We all have trials. I’ve had two children commit suicide. I’ve lost everything I owned in a house fire. I suffered terribly through the wretched Obama economy. I’ve suffered some horrible family difficulties. I could have found plenty to complain about but I tried to remain upbeat and grateful to God. Yes, even those hard days were the Good Old Days. They taught me patience and to trust God. What can be wrong with that?
