Top retailer accused of discrimination while promoting Hanukkah, Kwanzaa
worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=47330

A Catholic advocacy group has launched a national boycott against Wal-Mart, claiming the world’s No. 1 retailer has in effect “banned” Christmas, while promoting other seasonal holidays such as Hanukkah and Kwanzaa.

But Wal-Mart tells WorldNetDaily it has “absolutely not” banned Christmas, but is just “trying to serve all our customers for the holiday season.”

According to the New York-based Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, the controversy was sparked when a woman recently complained to Wal-Mart that the store was replacing its “Merry Christmas” greeting with “Happy Holidays.”

The League says the woman received an e-mail response from a customer-service representative, reading exactly as follows:

Walmart is a world wide organization and must remain conscious of this. The majority of the world still has different practices other than “christmas” which is an ancient tradition that has its roots in Siberian shamanism. The colors associated with “christmas” red and white are actually a representation of of the aminita mascera mushroom. Santa is also borrowed from the Caucuses, mistletoe from the Celts, yule log from the Goths, the time from the Visigoth and the tree from the worship of Baal. It is a wide wide world.
Catholic League president Bill Donohue speculated the writer of that e-mail was perhaps drunk, so he sent the response to Dan Fogelman in Wal-Mart’s public-relations department.

Donohue received back a response from Fogelman, who wrote in part:

As a retailer, we recognize some of our customers may be shopping for Chanukah or Kwanzaa gifts during this time of year and we certainly want these customers in our stores and to feel welcome, just as we do those buying for Christmas. As an employer, we recognize the significance of the Christmas holiday among our family of associates … and close our stores in observance, the only day during the year that we are closed.
“It’s nice to know that Wal-Mart is closed on a federal holiday,” explains Donohue, who says he’s asking the leaders of 126 religious organizations spanning seven religious communities to boycott the retail giant.

He points out, and WND confirmed, that when using the company’s online search engine, if the world “Hanukkah” is entered, 200 items for sale are returned. The term “Kwanzaa” yields 77. But when “Christmas” is entered, the message returned says: “We’ve brought you to our ‘Holiday’ page based on your search.”

I lived in Saudi for many years working for a local company. My boss who was Saudi, was married (one wife) with three kids, the same as I had at the time.

Every Christmas we would swap Christmas cards (purchasable in the local shops) and buy presents for each other kids, he would arrange a special Christmas day meal for all his Phillipino workers, most of whom were christian and they all had two days “free” holiday.

Not bad for a “terrorist” country, seems Wal-Mart could learn something about tolerance if they tried.

I don’t see how the phrase “Happy Holidays” promotes Hanukkah or Kwanzaa any more than it promotes Christmas.

With Christmas carols playing over their speaker system, and Christmas decorations, cards, gifts, etc filling the shelves it seems as if Wal-Mart has not forgotten Christmas.

It seems every group wanting attention decides to boycott or sue Wal-Mart.

I think you just broke the code.

Boycotting Walmart because they aren’t pro-Christmas enough???

:rotfl:

Some peoples children

Maybe not to get attention, but to point out what a monster Wal-Mart is supposed to be. There is a movie being released momentarily named “Walmart - The High Cost of Low Price.” It purports to “take you behind the glitz and into the real lives of workers and their families, business owners and their communities, in an extraordinary journey that will challenge the way you think, feel… and shop.” The producers of the film call it "a feature length documentary that uncovers a retail giant’s assault on families and American values.

They say that “The film dives into the deeply personal stories and everyday lives of families and communities struggling to fight a goliath. A Working mother is forced to turn to public assistance to provide healthcare for her two small children. A Missouri family loses its business after Wal-Mart is given over $2 million to open its doors down the road. A mayor struggles to equip his first responders after Wal-Mart pulls out and relocates just outside the city limits. A community in California unites, takes on the giant, and wins!”

Who’s right? Who knows? In any case, It should be interesting to see and think about. There are no Walmarts here in New York City yet, but there are a few out on Long Island. The typical New York competition doesn’t make it the overwhelming behemoth that it is elsewhere.

The Arkansas Times (which is pretty far left) recently did an article on WalMart during the hurricanes. WalMart gave more than any other business ($20 million) and also used their Emergency Operations Center to get needed goods to the striken area – for example, when one town’s sewers were backed up and its electricity out, WalMart diverted a generator from a store to that town to get the pumps running.

Of course, they also published the mandatory anti-WalMart stuff. It seems WalMart has created a great sin – by putting giving into the hands of local managers they give SMALL gifts (but they give a lot of them.) This apparently too efficient for the anti-WalMart crowd.

Plus, it makes their tax return over 2,000 pages long and “It’s too hard for us to analyze!!”

That may simply be an effort at PR in the face of widespread hostility, but whatever the company’s motives, the help was certainly appreciated by its recipients. But, keep in mind that even Al Capone ran soup kitchens in Chicago during the Great Depression

Gifts? To employees, to managers? I don’t quite understand.

What does the size of a tax return have to do with its business practices?

If it’s PR, it’s not very good PR – since an effort like this would be splashed across the front pages and on the nightly news if a good PR man were running ti.

Gifts to local charities and causes – for example, they gave St. Mary’s Church $40 off on a shotgun we raffled.

Each store manager has a charitable giving budget, and decides what and where to give locally.

Why, such a large tax return makes it difficult for Wal Mart critics to analyze Wal Mart’s “giving pattern” of course!!

The critics want Wal Mart to give all $20 million to ONE cause – makes it easier to attack them.

You may be right, but I think that Walmart must have intended it to be good PR.

Okay, I understand what you said.

Would that an attack on their charitable practices was the only thing they were being attacked about.

Perhaps in the literal sense of the term, public relations. But they don’t seem to be trumpeting it to the press – which you would expect if they did it only for publicity purposes.

Of course, Wal Mart is one of those entities that will always be accused of doing the right things for the wrong motives – no matter what they do, or what their real motives are.
Arba Sicula:

Wal Mart is attacked for everything. One of the Walton heirs gave a $26 million dollar painting to a local museum – and was immediately attacked “Think how much health insurance that money would have bought for poor Arkansans!!”

Odd that the same charge wasn’t levied against the Clinton Library.

Walmart is a world wide organization and must remain conscious of this. It seems to me that the most egregious thing in this whole mess is this load of baloney from one of their customer relations people. What? Did this person read Jack Chick one too many times or something? Now, this is what I’d be protesting, not Wal-mart’s effort to sell to people who celebrate other holidays besides Christmas, especially in areas where such people are as many as those who celebrate Christmas. As a retailer that is their right and prerogative. But, directing calls for Christmas items to “holiday” while having a direct link to other faith celebration items IS prejudice and they should be called on that as well as on this truly stupid email sent to inquirers by this bigoted airhead.

I know from being in the church choir that we aren’t suppose to play chirstmas music until after christmas…SOo I think we should boycott all stores that play christmas music.🙂 Seriously people give Walmart a hard time. If you don’t like them then don’t shop there. I like shopping at walmart and will continue to shop there. They give back to the community and don’t always do it with grand fanfare and almost have anything i need. It’s one stop shopping. They may have some bad employee pratices and yes we need to fight for those workers but you can not yell at them for doing what american business do best. When they see a market they move in and make money. It’s called captialism and it is what our countries economy runs on.

I agree with you 100%. The don’t want to offend non-Christians but seem to have no problem offending Christians.

I got this email from Catholic League and this statement bewildered me. What has this guy been smoking?
Either he’s a fanatical evangelical who’s taken the “pagen roots of Halloween” thing to its logical conclusion; a pagan/atheist/agnostic trying to “shock the ignorant xtians”; or someone who’s been brainwashed by one of the above types. I haven’t read such a nonsensical rant in a long time; it would be funny if the tone weren’t so hateful.
And besides, aren’t red and green the colors associated with christmas? 😉

Will we be kicked out of the Church and excommunicated if we don’t join in the boycott? These things are making it impossible to do business anywhere.😦

Bill Donohue commented today on the latest development in the Catholic League’s fight with Wal-Mart:

“Yesterday, I announced a boycott of Wal-Mart and asked 126 religious organizations that span seven faith communities to join with us. We want a) an apology for insulting Christians by effectively banning Christmas and b) a withdrawal of its insane statement regarding the origins of Christmas and c) a revision on its website.

“The piece today by Joe Kovacs on worldnetdaily.com quotes Wal-Mart spokeswoman Jolanda Stewart saying, ‘We already serve a diverse customer base, and we’re just trying to help them to celebrate their individual needs and wants.’ I thought Wal-Mart was a department store—not a Wellness Center.

“Stewart’s remark is flatulent. If Wal-Mart had a ‘Holiday’ section on its website that directed customers to its Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa sites, that would not be objectionable. What is objectionable is its steadfast defense of the statement about the origins of Christmas as crafted by its Customer Relations department, and the way its customers are directed online to find Christmas items. Searches for Hanukkah and Kwanzaa direct customers to the Jewish and African-American holiday sections, but searches for Christmas are directed to the ‘Holiday’ section. Ergo, Wal-Mart discriminates in its treatment of Christmas.

“Today, I e-mailed Dan Fogleman, Senior Manager of Public Relations, letting him know the following: ‘Now that Wal-Mart is standing by its position, I hope you’re ready for our next move. Don’t forget, we have the next six weeks to pull out all the stops, and we will.’”

WAL-MART BANS CHRISTMAS:

BOYCOTT LAUNCHED

catholicleague.org/05press_releases/quarter%204/051109_Wal-Mart_boycott.htm

A woman who recently complained to Wal-Mart that the store was replacing “Merry Christmas” with “Happy Holidays” received an e-mail response from Customer Service. It appears below in its exact form:

“Walmart is a world wide organization and must remain conscious of this. The majority of the world still has different practices other than ‘christmas’ which is an ancient tradition that has its roots in Siberian shamanism. The colors associated with ‘christmas’ red and white are actually a representation of of the aminita mascera mushroom. Santa is also borrowed from the Caucuses, mistletoe from the Celts, yule log from the Goths, the time from the Visigoth and the tree from the worship of Baal. It is a wide wide world.”

To which Catholic League president Bill Donohue says: “This statement was signed by someone called Kirby. When I read it, I thought he might be drunk. But I was wrong. We sent Kirby’s response to Wal-Mart’s headquarters only to find that Dan Fogleman, Senior Manager, Public Relations, agrees. After acknowledging that he read Kirby’s response, Fogleman said, in part, the following”:

“As a retailer, we recognize some of our customers may be shopping for Chanukah or Kwanza gifts during this time of year and we certainly want these customers in our stores and to feel welcome, just as we do those buying for Christmas. As an employer, we recognize the significance of the Christmas holiday among our family of associates…and close our stores in observance, the only day during the year that we are closed.”

Bill Donohue says: “It’s nice to know that Wal-Mart is closed on a federal holiday. Now here is why I am asking the leaders of 126 religious organizations that span seven religious communities to boycott Wal-Mart. Go to its website and search for Hanukkah and up come 200 items. Click on Kwanzaa and up come 77. Click on Christmas, and here’s what you get: ‘We’ve brought you to our ‘Holiday’ page based on your search.’ In other words, Wal-Mart is practicing discrimination.” Contact Fogleman at dan.fogleman@wal-mart.com.

Frankly, any retailer that instructs its employees to avoid saying Merry Christmas and tries to avoid the reason for the season doesn’t deserve my money. If all Christians did the same, you wouldn’t see the pagan and pc attack on Christmas and Christianity succeed.
