The League says the woman received an e-mail response from a customer-service representative, reading exactly as follows:

Walmart is a world wide organization and must remain conscious of this. The majority of the world still has different practices other than “christmas” which is an ancient tradition that has its roots in Siberian shamanism. The colors associated with “christmas” red and white are actually a representation of of the aminita mascera mushroom. Santa is also borrowed from the Caucuses, mistletoe from the Celts, yule log from the Goths, the time from the Visigoth and the tree from the worship of Baal. It is a wide wide world.
Catholic League president Bill Donohue speculated the writer of that e-mail was perhaps drunk, so he sent the response to Dan Fogelman in Wal-Mart’s public-relations department.
That’s interesting… I’ve read and been “taught” some different things about “Christmas traditions” and I personally don’t doubt that some of the pagan origin theories are very likely true. But the shamanism and mushroom bit, hmmmmm, that’s new!! :hmmm:

Note: I’m not “anti-Christmas” I just try to be honest with what I’ve learned and believe.

“Today, I e-mailed Dan Fogleman, Senior Manager of Public Relations, letting him know the following: ‘Now that Wal-Mart is standing by its position, I hope you’re ready for our next move. Don’t forget, we have the next six weeks to pull out all the stops, and we will.’”

Wal-Mart will be fine!! Not “fined” - I mean “fine.” They won’t suffer any significant losses for their decisions.

That’s my prediction. Maybe some of us, me included, will shop there less, or not Christmas shop there, but WalMart will survive just fine.

However, if their delivery trucks didn’t run… That would put the hurt on them!!

Walmart all and all should be fine, but if enough of the right people join board on the boycott, they can probably drop what they expect to drop what they do by a small fraction, but it’ll change a good Christmas season to a fair one, and thus drop their share price. The store will still run, but they’ll lose some profit and shareholder value.

I almost feel sorry for Walmart. Hiring someone who lectures customers on the orgins of their religious holidays is the most bone-headed thing a retailer could do. Even if this guy didn’t dredge up the same facts we hear from radical secularists year after year, even if he was not obviously hostile to the faith, it still isn’t done.

More from Wal-Mart:

news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051111/ap_on_bi_ge/wal_mart_holidays
Fogleman said Thursday that Kirby no longer worked for the company.
“We at Wal-Mart believe this e-mail between a temporary associate and one of our valued customers was entirely inappropriate. Its contents in no way represent the policies, practices or views of our company. This associate, who was hired less than three weeks ago, is no longer employed by our company,” Fogleman said in an e-mail to the AP.
“Wal-Mart is proud to welcome customers of all faiths, and celebrants of all holidays. We sincerely apologize to any person or organization that was offended by the inappropriate and inflammatory comments made by this former associate.”

Frankly, any retailer that instructs its employees to avoid saying Merry Christmas and tries to avoid the reason for the season doesn’t deserve my money.
I have to say that I agree here. Last year, I made it a point to say Merry Christmas to every establishment I went to. People were shocked and said they were not allowed to say “Merry Christmas” back to me, instead “Happy Holidays”.

Frankly I find it extremely ridiculous that businesses pander to the PC movement by eliminating Christmas from their stores. However they do not have a problem promoting Christmas before Halloween so they can try to get people to buy early.

Not to change the topic here, but I went on Mary Kay’s website. This is a company that is supposed to be based on Christian principles, and they do not mention Christmas on their website. They too have pandered and now everything is Holiday gifts. I thought that was interesting and goes back to what I was saying earlier.

Personally I do not like shopping at Wal Mart and avoid going there as much as possible.

Wal Mart nutcase meets Catholic League nutcase.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon12.gif

I don’t see any reason to attack the company just because they have a guy with an obvious loose screw somewhere in their organization.

If this all is true, then whats wrong with Christmas, it’s multicultural. They’ve borrowed stuff from everyone. You can embrace the Goths culture and Siberians at the same time, while your in the States. It sounds more multicultural than WalMart could ever hope to be.

I agree with you 100%. The don’t want to offend non-Christians but seem to have no problem offending Christians.
And it seems to be happening more & more. We are losing our rights very quickly.

You seem to have a problem with the Catholic League. Why? The Catholic League typically takes orthodox Catholic positions and fights against antiCatholic bigotry.
No, I have a problem with Bill Donohue’s (over)reaction in this case. He’s starting to sound like Phil Donohue.

But I’m glad to see this – if we’ve come to the point where we launch a national boycott over something like this, then obviously all our serious problems have been solved.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon12.gif

I understand what you mean but I believe there is room for things like this boycott and Other things as well…

How many organizations donate to things like Planned Parenthood? Do we boycott them all?

No, we don’t.

We are wasting our efforts and making ourselves look rediculous here – and that robs us of moral standing.

Well…I guess we disagree 🙂

Well now, some of us try, fightpp.org/ and it has cost PP millions of dollars! Over 120 companies have stopped giving money to PP and its deadly agenda. Boycotts do work. Remember E-bay stopping The Eucharist from being auctioned off? That would not have happened without a boycott.

Thanks,
Stephanie

I really hate Wal-mart and try not to shop there, but sometimes I can’t help it since it is so convenient. I was just there a few days ago and the place was full of Christmas stuff. I didn’t notice even one Hannukah or Kwanzaa item. This is such a tempest in a teapot. I do hope the boycott hurts Wal-mart somewhat because they are taking over the world.

The Germans have a word for this – the schwerpunct. That’s the critical point, piece of terrain in a battle. They point out, go for the schewrpunct and win – ignore it and fail.

Let’s put our efforts into things that are important – like stopping abortion.

And doesn’t wounding PP in their wallet,.help to do that? They are the largest abortion provider in the country.

While we work to make abortion illegal, can’t we also work to cripple this anti-chastitiy, anti-life orgainzation, with something as simple as writing some letters, making some phone calls, and not giving money to the folks who enable PP? It is such a simple thing.

Thanks,
Stephanie

Sure – but if we try to boycott everybody, we wind up boycotting nobody. We don’t want to get a reputation as “Those nuts who boycotted Wal Mart over their Christmas display.”

Let’s focus on the schewrpunct – abortion. Let’s boycott the major givers to PP. And let’s not waste time and credibility boycotting other concerns for frivilous reasons.
