I heard Carol Mcwiggin on open lines say the guy at Wal-Mart
that said they were not going to say Merry Christman was let
go and they changed the policy, for all greetings, well then I
was driving by a Wal-Mart and saw picketers outside with signs
saying don’t shop here cuz of they won’t greet you with Merry
Christmas. Before I spend a penny in that store will someone
who knows the recent will answer and let me know just confused.

They said Merry Christmas to me this afternoon.

I called the Wal-Mart store the other day and they answered the phone by saying…“Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays”. so they are responding.

The new Super Walmart by my house answers the phones “Happy Holidays”. The greeters just say "Hello and Welcome to Wal Mart.

I guess they will not get a penny from me

Tried something… I went to the local Wal-Mart… I said Merry Christmas to 3 ppl… got… one no answer ( to be fair… he looked really busy… and a little grumpy when I had him find something for me ) … one employeee said Thank You… and one employee said Merry Christmas. 👍

I asked three employees at Wal-Mart and two at Sam’s Club and all said that they had been given no instructions about what to say during the holidays. All that I wished a merry Christmas returned it with smiles.

hol·i·day Audio pronunciation of “holiday” ( P ) Pronunciation Key (hl-d) n.
  1. A day free from work that one may spend at leisure, especially a day on which custom or the law dictates a halting of general business activity to commemorate or celebrate a particular event.
  2. A religious feast day; a holy day.
  3. Chiefly British. A vacation. Often used in the phrase on holiday.
[Middle English holidai, holy day,[/COLOR] from Old English hlig dæg : hlig, holy; see holy + dæg, day; see day.]

I don’t see what the problem is with Happy Holidays. Christmas is just as secularized as Holiday, so what difference does it make?

The problem is that over 90% of Americans celebrate Christmas and people are being coerced into avoiding that specific word for the sake of a few nutcases in the ACLU.

Yet I feel it’s safe to bet that a large portion of that 90% doesn’t actually celebrate Christ’s Mass, in which case there version of Christmas is diluted from what the day is supposed to be.

Are people so forgetful of the Advent season that they need to be reminded whenever stepping into a Walmart? Personally, when I go to Walmart, I go to purchase food and other items, not to be reminded of my faith by someone whose beliefs are most likely quite different than my own.

Also, when was the ACLU mentioned? I refuse to believe they’re involved unless I see actual documentation that says otherwise.

Our Wal-Mart has a sign outside saying “Merry Christmas” so I guess they didn’t get the memo. 😃

1 If they don’t ccelebrate the way you wish are they banned form celebrating?

2 Yes people are so forgetful of the advent season. Look around you.

3 The aclu is the one that invokes fear in these large corporations they don’t have to get involved someone just has to threaten.

God forbid someone say “Happy Holidays”… The last time I checed, X-Mas is a holiday, so it would fall under the “Happy Holiday” message.

This is not what I said. My point is that the origins of both the words Christmas and Holiday have been diluted. Of these two, Christmass is a subset of Holiday.

If I were running a business, I would prefer my greeters to use terms that are pertinent to a larger customer base. Holiday fits a broader customer base than does Christmas, yet still pertains to those that do celebrate Christmas.

If the bell ringers, decorations, and background Christmas music aren’t enough to remind shoppers that it’s Advent, then I seriously doubt that a greeter saying Merry Christmas is going to be any more effective.

So it’s inconceivable that Walmart made this policy based soley on their own business goals? You assume that they made their policy through fear of the ACLU, when it’s just as possible that they came up with it all on their own.

I was there last night 2 people said “Merry Christmas”, 1 said “thank you for shopping at Wal-Mart” and 1 said “Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah(sp?)” By the way I was not offended by the Happy Hanukkah.

I was told ‘Merry Christmas’ by Sam’s Club the other day. First time I heard it by a retailer all year!

I’m still waiting for them to greet me with a hearty Happy Festivus!
