Walkin' Away with the Eucharist . . .

Thanks folks . . . You ALWAYS know when to say the right thing!!

This thread of course begs the question, what can Catholics who love the Blessed Sacrament do about abuses such as this? I’m speaking especially about lay men and women who are not EMHC. Obviously, we should all receive Communion devoutly and correctly, so as to teach by example. We should also pray, and explain to non-Catholic family and friends who visit with us that they should not receive communion. But is there anything else we can do?

Even if you are not a priest, deacon or EMHC, if you see somebody walking away with the Eucharist, you should still inform the priests, deacons or EMHC’s. Ushers could also try to keep an eye out for people who are abusing our Lord in this way. And if you find any Hosts in the pews, the books, or on the floor, please let your priest know.

I will say, I have functioned as a master of ceremonies in four churches over ten years, and I have watched many a communion procession, both at altar rails and without, Tridentine and Novus Ordo.

I have never, not once, not ever, seen someone try to walk off with a host.

I am not saying it doesn’t happen…I’m sure it does, somewhere, sometime…but I would be very cautious about extraordinary ministers talking about being led by the Spirit to go catch walkers-off.
Good of you to make the observation, Alex, but I HAVE seen it. One lady took it with her to the shrine of the Divine Mercy at the back of the Church, knelt at the prie-deux (sp), and THEN consumed it. I notified an usher and then the head usher had a talk with her.

The Sacred Host has been found in the poor box in our parish on several occasions.

I think that there are people who just genuinely don’t know what to do. I assume that they aren’t Catholic, for the most part. Apart from anyone who would secret the Host away for an evil purpose (and I reckon it’s very, very few), I think most mishandle the Most Sacred Body out of ignorance…which could easily be corrected.

Urge the priests to TALK about this! Make acts of reparation to the Blessed Sacrament.

And then there are those who attempt to profit from a consecrated host. A year or so ago, there was a man (not Catholic) who was attempting to sell a host that had been consecrated by JPII on ebay. The Sioux City office was able to get it from him, but it caused quite a rucus among us in the midwest. Here is a link to the story:

What a bizarre objection! I had no idea that you weren’t allowed to carry the host to your seat and take it there. I don’t think I ever have but suppose the lady had thought to meditate on the sacrifice that God has made before consuming it? It’s not like she can wait till later cos the folk directing you don’t give time for reflection cos they want evewryone down the aisle and out the door as quick as possible. I can’t imagine the reason why you are debating such trivial things when there are far worse things happening like wars, famines, people not even knowing God etc. Sure, God thinks that the way in which we receive Him is more important than if we receive at all??? BTW I’ve never walked back to my seat with the Host, as far as I can recall.

I DO hope you are being sarcastic.

Im afraid your entire post is not very…well…good.

There are many ways to contemplate Christ before recieving without taking him back to your seat as a personal pet-Jesus.

How about when the Priest holds him up for the consecration, when he holds it up for the Agnus Dei, when the minister holds it up before giving it to you.

Contemplate him then.

But taking the host back to the seat with you is completly unacceptable.

(not saying you did it, but referring to the lady who did of course)

she may have been totally unaware that it wasn’t acceptable as was I. Many people pop It in their mouths as they turn away from the server or even after they turn away. It is not always made clear to people what exactly is expected. I’ve been ‘doing it right’ purely by accident, not cos I knew. The other issue is the one of chewing the Host or letting It melt - I assumed chewing would be wrong yet I have seen priests teaching kids about 1st Communion and neglecting to tell the kids not to chew. Maybe you can chew but I won’t.
