Walmart shoppers' Christmas spirit?

WalMart needs to be held accountable in this death. Not just in NY, but across the country assaults take place over these come-on deals. Door busters they are called. They are always a riot waiting to happen. If a bar operated with the degree of violence that these Black Friday sales operate with, it would be shut down. It is time to end Black Friday.

I’d agree with this, they will ill prepared for the onslaught, and should have seen it coming.

Why? Are the items I listed NOT true? When was the last time someone that walked around with his pants hanging down at a job interview got the job?

I will not enter into this argument. This is more of the same. Let’s leave it at you have your thoughts on the subject and I have mine.

I’m wondering if we all can to stick to the topic. A man lost his life due to frenzied “Christmas” shopping.

Totally agree that it is time to end “Black Friday”. I hope there is a movement afoot somewhere and it takes off!

Let’s change things so that retailers can no longer rely on this one day to put them in the black. What if they ran their businesses so that they were not in the red all year? Imagine if the day after Thanksgiving we had news stories signaling the beginning of Advent. How cool would that be!

That’s nor fair at all. You called his comments hateful and mean-spirited and now you want even explain why? I didn’t see it either. I would think that the Golden Rule would apply and if someone called you those names, don’t you think you would either be entitled to an explanation so that you could defend your good name or at least an apology? Would you accept some one saying those things to you and then saying they didn’t want to talk about it?

I agree. I think once Guy explained himself his comments, although maybe not in the best taste in this thread, have some merit on their own. I don’t believe he’s being hateful or mean-spirited. At this point my major disagreement is that his comments are a non-sequitur: blaming the death of this young Walmart worker on the poor. It does not follow.

All you have to do to be poor in this country is be laid off from work through no fault of your own, and not have a lot family wealth to back you up. Not hard at all. You’ve probably just never been in that situation.

As to your “proof”, I fail to see what non-poor people rioting has to do with poor people.

Am I the only one who doesn’t think WalMart isn’t responsible? Those people were not forced to stampede. They chose to behave they way they did although there was a mob mentality driving it, too. This didn’t happen at the WalMart where I live or where a friend did her shopping (or at Kohl’s, she was a Kohl’s at 3:45 Friday morning :bowdown:). Why did it happen there and not at other Wal*Marts or other stores with major sales?
 
I think everyone I know had the same reaction about this story…Which was, why are we as a nation, so materialistic.???..I personally worked on black Friday…but out of all our area ,their were only a few at work , the rest shopped…When I was young, it was like a tradition in my sister-in-law family, the ladies got together and went shopping and to lunch every black Friday(course it wasn’t called that back then) and it was nothing like it is nowadays…I think the media has alot to do with causing the frenzy.Also people need to become wiser and place God over the material…tone down and put Christ back into the picture, and this will all go away…I personally don’t feel like it is Christmas till Midnight Mass, then the Holy spirit of what it all means, is just pure vivid bliss…No store offers that…May God have mercy on the soul of that poor Walmart worker and show the compassion and mercy to his family as well…May all the people involved with this death pray for forgiveness and never pick material over human life again…In Jesus name I pray…Amen…Fondly, LynneMarie

I’m with you. A lot of people will go out for the fun of it. One of the jokes on the morning radio show was when there was the outdoors guys was on the radio saying he couldn’t believe that his wife and daughter got up so early in order to go shopping. One of the guys chimed in saying, “yes this coming from a guy who will wake up at 1:30 AM to get to his tree stand to hunt.”

Yes, policies should be looked at like price selection and availablity of product, as well as tactics to open stores up. By in large though, this is the exception not the norm.

Ours had nine arrests. Yes, the people involved must bear the primary brunt of responsibility.

Let me add that one can do the whole early morning sales without inciting riots. It is when stores such as Walmart do the cost or below cost, limited quantities, only a handful, sales that this stuff happens.

One solution would be to require that all advertised sales be subject to rain checks. This would eliminate come-on sales and the push to get in front of other shoppers.

True, but Walmart if they saw a huge crowd like this…they probably should have had more security to curtail the crowd a bit coming through the door…and shouldn’t have put a totally inexperienced person at the front door, even though he was large in size, in an attempt to control the crowd. Walmart sometimes doesn’t operate very responsibly, from what I read about them. I think that the people who trampled the man and just kept going, should be prosecuted, also, in my opinion. Get the video tape and start looking for the people who were directly responsible for the man’s death. I still can’t believe this happened. So sad. Sad commentary about how we don’t seem to be learning lessons about greed in this country. 🤷

That’s a good editorial. Thanks for sharing.

I have to note that I have yet to meet a person who is not completely horrified by the circumstances of this employee’s death. That in itself gives me hope that we are not too far gone.
