Um, @Maxirad, do you think the warning in question is justified?

Well, Maxirad, this sort of baloney is why I don’t bother with Disney+ , or most other streaming services.

Old shows need to be shown in their entirety and without slapping woke warnings on them, or else not shown at all.

Um, I’m interested to know your thoughts on this @Irishmom2???

I’d rather they acknowledge the offensive stereotypes in older comics/movies than never show them or, even worse, dub or redo or cut the scenes entirely.

How blacks were portrayed in Gone With the Wind was very stereotypical for the time. They now place a disclaimer admitting this before showing it…and then show the movie, the whole movie and nothing but the movie. Call it “woke” all you want, it’s informative and makes us aware of sometimes very subtle racism. Then I can take my woke self and enjoy the show!

😂 That’s funny. It always amazes me that people are offended by these type of things - comedic portrayals, stereotypes in comedy or art or whatever. So long as it’s not mean-spirited, I think we need to be able to laugh at one another’s differences, in a healthy way. I mean, the Irish do like drinking, swearing, fighting and eating potatoes. 🤷‍♂️ 🥔 🍻

The part of progressives that are rabid and trying to cancel everything will not be satiated with a warning.

Gone With The Wind was 1939. But there were films and tv shows well into the 70’s and 80’s that I am ashamed to say I used to enjoy. I’m obviously now more aware of the offence that they were giving. But it’s easy looking back to see what we did wrong back then. The tougher question is - what do we accept now that in 40 years time will considered shamefull?

And I was always a DC guy myself. I mean, Supergirl and the raging hormones of a 13 year old…do dots need to be joined here? But my son was always Marvel. Go figure.

I remember this episode. Asians have accents like everyone else. Why this is problematic is beyond me.

You obviously don’t have children or grandchildren.

I don’t think they’re actually censoring anything. It’s just a text warning in the description. Peter Pan has one too for the very racist depiction of natives (and honestly that one is pretty bad)… but you can still watch the film in its entirety. As a parent with a young child, I’ve found Disney+ to be a treasure trove… regardless of the views of the corporate overlords.

Like what?
The Black and White Minstrels was Saturday night family entertainment up until the late 70’s.

And a sitcom called Love Thy Neighbour from the 70’s:

I knew LTN was bad even then. And I’m embarressed linking to it. But it was so popular. What can I say…?

It’s the free market at work. Warning labels don’t stop the enjoyment of anything. It’s fine to acknowledge media from the past was insensitive and still partake in it.

The real question is how about eating at restaurants that are required to post a cancer & birth defect warning about their food?

Most of the sitcoms of the 70’s and 80’s had women portrayed as mere sexual objects for the men in the shows. If there was a career woman, she was brash, mean and wore glasses on the end of her nose.

All In the Family was one of the early sitcoms that started breaking the mold…somewhat. Archie was a bigot and was one of the first characters where his bigotry was challenged by his daughter and son in law. Archies wife Edith was often portrayed and the sweet but clueless housewife, always taking care of Archies every need but now and then she burst forth with a bit more brains than Archie. By facing…and laughing at the stereotypes, it exposed a lot of our assumptions and made us face them…while laughing at the same time.

The Cosby show finally broke many racial stereotypes by showing a well off, intelligent AA family being normal. While the stereotypes continued in many shows, a few stood out as breaking the old molds for women and blacks…Asians and Hispanics are still waiting.

What show was that! Sorry, I missed it. I love much of British TV and hate how limited we’ve been in getting it!

I have no issue with warnings, I’m surprised it’s taken this long for someone to bring them up. There are warnings all over Disney+, even cartoons like Steamboat Willie have them over the use of tobacco.
