If my memory serves me right, King Henry VIII was born a Catholic and staunchly practiced and defended the faith. However, his downfall was the sin of adultery, having taken 6 wives during his lifetime. He had a few of them murdered.
The Catholic Church had him excommunicated because of his adulterous so-called marriages. He became enraged, and he then had many Catholic priests and people killed. He by this time had become a protestant, and I believe he founded the Church of England.
His death was foretold to him by some Catholic priest or layperson. That he would die a disgusting death and dogs would follow the procession and lick the blood dripping from the casket. Yes I do remember reading this, I donāt know if it is true or not. Supposedly too, he was so unpopular with the English people that his family had to pay people to attend the funeral services.
So I would say both. He was born a Catholic, but he eventually turned to protestantism.
