I’d like to jump with both feet into this discussion.
10 And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?”
11 He answered and said to them, “Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12 For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 13 Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says:
‘ Hearing you will hear and shall not understand,
And seeing you will see and not perceive;
15 For the hearts of this people have grown dull.
Their ears are hard of hearing,
And their eyes they have closed,
Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears,
Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,
So that I should[a]heal them.’**
16 But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear; 17 for assuredly, I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it. **
Can’t you see, he is telling the Apostles, to whom Sacred Tradition was entrusted, that they would be able to understand because they were privy to the mysteries of the Kingdom of heaven that provide the context but that those who didn’t have access to Tradition, would be lost in the seeming ambiguity of scripture, seeing but not understanding and becoming increasingly hardened at heart.
- The Catholic Church clearly teaches that the Bible is inspired and that it is trustworthy.
- Everything in the Bible is correct and self consistent when understood in the correct way.
- Human language is limited by definition. The reason Jesus taught with stories is that the stories can transcend the limitation of language and translations.
- Jesus taught verbally, not by leaving a book because written language is more limited than the spoken language, You can ask clarifying questions to a teacher. And both Student and teacher have the potential to identify when understanding is not passing between them efficiently. You can’t ask a question of a book and the book certainly can’t guage when you are missing the point and making a correction.
- The bible is ambiguous if you don’t have the "keys’ to understand it. By “keys” I mean the theological context that allows you to understand it: Catholic Tradition. I personally don’t find it in the least bit ambiguous. There are things I don’t understand fully, like the prophesies of Revelation, but I don’t think this is due to ambiguity. I think like the old testament prophesies, they won’t be perfectly understood until they are realized because we have our own preconceived notions that keep us from understanding the truth.
